Sampling Protocol for Soil and Water Sampling for Assessing as Status in South-west Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of this work improve knowledge of the geographical distribution of contamination of soil and irrigation water with arsenic, in order to target arsenic management strategies to the most contaminated areas. In total 4620 soil samples and 1540 water samples from 1540 locations has been collected and all soil samples has been processed and digested and all 1540 water samples analysed for As, and 839 samples for Fe, Mn and P. 4345 soil samples analysed for As. We also used 183 water samples and 552 soil samples in Faridpur and Rajbari for water and soil interpolation map, collected by BSMRAU. Almost all surveys upazilas data entry have been completed by this time. From the maps and graphs it can be concluded that, the As level is high (>200 ppb) in Chandpur, Munshiganj, a part of Shariyatpur, Gopalganj & Satkhira district for water and also high (15 ppm) in Satkhira, Gopalganj, Shariyatpur, Rajbari & Madaripur district for soil, where As level shows high in recently installed well (1995-2012) and maximum As level observed in shallow well (<200 feet).

Objectives:

To improve knowledge of the geographical distribution of contamination of soil and irrigation water with arsenic, in order to target arsenic management strategies to the most contaminated areas.

Methodology:

Digital Elevation Map (DEM) was used to identify the low elevated areas in Bangladesh. Land type, Flash flood and Tidal data were overlaid with DEM to find the actual submergence area which may be used for rice cultivation. Date of initiation, recession and depth of flood were analyzed to determine the areas suitable for BRRI varieties. To authenticate the results ground truthing was done. ArcGIS-10.1 Spatial Analysis Tool were used for GIS analysis and constructing the maps. Where Exponential model (water interpolation) and Spherical Model (soil interpolation) were used in kriging determined through semi-variance analysis by GS+, Geo-statistics for environmental science software.

Achievement/Findings:

Sampling distribution for soil and water, where all samples are uniformly distributed. So the interpolation map for soil and water would be very accurate and precise. From the map it can be described that very high label (<200 ppb) of Water Arsenic(As) areas are Chandpur, Munshiganj, Madaripur, some parts of Goplaganj ,Satkhira, comilla and Brahamanbaria district then 150-200 ppb are mainly Shatkhira, Gopalganj, Shariyatpur, Comilla and some parts of Faridpur. 100-150 ppb mainly Faridpur, Narayanganj some areas of Bagherhat, Khulna, 50-100 ppb Meherpur, Chuadanga, Jessore, Narail, Manikganj, Narshingdi, Bagherhat and low < 50ppb dominant in Kushtia, Khulna, Jhenaidah, Magura, Rajbari and Dhaka. As Arsenic(As) label of all collected soil samples still do not not obtained from laboratory so soil and water interpolation map are not same extend. We can say that Very high > 20ppm Chandpur, Madaripur, some parts of Dhaka , Manikganj, Shatkhira, Narshingdi 15-20 ppm Faridpur some parts of Shariyatpur, Narail, Gopalganj 10-15 ppm some areas Magura, Rajbari, Faridpur, Shatkhira Narayanganj Shariyatpur, Munshiganj some parts of Comilla, Narshingdi.5-10ppm dominant in Kushtia, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Jhenaidah, Jessore, Khulna, Bagherhat, Dhaka and Comilla. Very low <5 very pockets area in Jhenaidah, Dhaka, Brahamanbaria and Comilla.
