N-management Through Use of Lcc in Modern Boro and T. Aman Rice Introduction for Small Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nitrogen is the major essential plant nutrient. It is limited in almost all soils of Bangladesh. Indigenous N supplying capacity also varies from soil to soil. Proper management of N fertilizers is very essential to improve crop growth and grain yield, especially in intensive rice-based cropping systems. Optimal N management strategies aim at matching N fertilizer supply with actual crop demand, that improve yield by maximizing N uptake and reducing N losses. In most cases farmers’ use over doses of N in their rice crop, which causes higher insect and disease infestation resulting lower yield. Nitrogen application by the use of LCC, a real time N management, helps to increase grain yield and improve efficiency of N by reducing amount. The objective of the study was to promote LCC use in farmer's fields and improve N use efficiency. Grain yield of T. Aman variety was increased and amount of N use was decreased under LCC-based N management over the farmers’ practice. The average yield increased of BRRI dhan46 was 0.60 t/ha in T. Aman season. On an average 20.70 kg N/ha could be saved by LCC-based N management practice in Aman season over the farmers’ practice. Incase of BRRI dhan28, average yield was increased by 0.40 t/ha. On an average 21.40 kg N/ha could be saved by LCC-based N management practice in Boro season over the farmers’ practice.

Objectives:

To promote LCC use in farmer's fields and improve N use efficiency.

Methodology:

Nitrogen application by the use of LCC, a real time N management, helps to increase grain yield and improve efficiency of N by reducing amount. The objective of the study was to promote LCC use in farmer's fields and improve N use efficiency. A production program for promotion of LCC use was carried out in farmers’ fields at Moison, Kapasia, Gazipur during T. Aman 2012 and Boro season 2012-13. In T. Aman, BRRI dhan46 and in Boro, BRRI dhan28 was used. The method of N application through LCC was as per LCC critical value. The fertilizer rates for T. Aman and Boro was 195-60-100-65 and 260-95-120-112 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP and gypsum, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

The increased average yield of BRRI dhan46 was 0.60 t/ha in T. Aman and that was 0.40 t/ha for BRRI dhan28 in Boro season. On an average 20.7 kg N/ha and 21.2 kg N/ha could be saved by LCC based N management practice in Aman and Boro season, respectively over the farmers’ practice.
