Water Saving Technologies for Rice in the Farmers’ Field for Small Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Farmers generally misuse a lot of irrigation water when they irrigate their rice fields. Several water saving technologies are available, however farmers are not well aware of these. Therefore, farmers’ participatory demonstration trial was carried out to improve the water use efficiency and save the water resource in rice cultivation at farm level. Water used for three selected farmers’ fields under levee management and farmers’ practice were monitored in T. Aman season 2012. On an average 0.5 t/ha yield was increased in BRRI dhan46 compared to farmer's traditional levee management which increased average Tk. 9000 more income compared to traditional farmer's practice. In Boro season, number of irrigation and water used for three selected farmer's field under AWD method and farmers practice were monitored. On an average short duration variety like BRRI dhan28 received average 13.7 number of irrigations in AWD practice, whereas farmers practice was 17. Thus, 3.3 number of irrigation were saved in AWD compared to the farmers practice. The average yield under AWD practice was 5.1 (t/ha) whereas, for farmers practice it was 4.9 (t/ha).

Objectives:

To improve the water use efficiency and save the water resource in rice cultivation at farm level.

Methodology:

The trials were conducted at FSR&D site, Moison, Kapasia, Gazipur during the period of T. Aman 2012 and Boro 2012-13. Levee management practice was done in T. Aman and alternate wetting and drying (AWD) method was used in Boro season. Three farmers of small farm category were selected for this study. In T. Aman season, a field with a levee of 25-30 cm height and traditional levee were maintained. In Boro season to monitor the water level below ground surface and to make the schedule of irrigation time a perforated PVC pipe (AWD pipe) was installed in each field. Another field was kept without AWD pipe to compare the farmers practice.
