Professor
Department of Entomology Patuakhali Science and Technology University Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh

Taxonomic status of leafhoppers and planthoppers (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) from PSTU farm was studied at field and laboratory condition during the period from January 2014 to November, 2014. The collected species of Auchenorrhyncha were identified taxonomically and classified according to their taxonomic position. Results revealed that 5 genera with 8 leafhoppers species, Coelidia brevis (Walker, 1851), Cofana spectra (Distant, 1908), Maiestas dorsalis (Motschulsky, 1859), Nephotettix cincticeps (Uhler, 1896), Nephotettix malayanus, Ishihara & Kawase, 1968, Nephotettix nigropictus (Stål, 1870), Nephotettix virescens (Distant, 1908), Orosius orientalis (Matsumura, 1914), and 4 genera with 4 planthopper species, Nisia nervosa (Motschulsky, 1863), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål, 1854),   Sogatella furcifera (Horváth, 1899), Sardia rostrata (Wilson & Claridge, 1991) were recognized from above area. Among them two leafhoppers (Cofana spectra and Orosius orientalis) and two planthoppers (Nisia nervosa and Sardia rostrata) were newly recorded from Bangladesh. All species of leafhoppers and planthoppers were redescribed with male genital descriptions and proper illustrations.

  1. To collect and identify the specimen of Auchenorrhyncha for ensuring the distributional range with economic importance.
  2. To revise and arrange of leafhopper and planthoppers taxonomically in accordance with the modern reasonable classification system.
  3. To record the species and habitat of conservation importance.

Taxonomic status of leafhoppers and planthoppers (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) from PSTU farm was studied at field, and laboratory condition during the period from January 2014 to November, 2014 in the Department of Entomology, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh. The collected species of Auchenorrhyncha were identified taxonomically and classified according to their taxonomic position.Planthoppers and leafhoppers, those on woody plants, were collected individually by knocking specimens into a vial, by use of an aspirator with a relatively large opening, or by putting a sheet or large net under the foliage and striking the branches above. The specimens on herbaceous plants were collected with a sweep net or with light vacuum machine and stored in a plastic bag containing cotton balls soaked in ethyl acetate. Sometimes light trap using white cloths were used for collecting many planthoppers with aspirator.Collected specimens were killed in various ways by placing them directly into 70% ethyl alcohol or putting them in killing jars containing a cotton ball soaked in ethyl acetate, or freezing specimens. Only for molecular work, nymphs and some adults were stored in vials filled with 70-99% ethyl alcohol. After thorough washing in distilled water, the genital segment was transferred into a watch glass filled with a modified Hood's solution (75% ethyl alcohol 70 parts: glycerin 25 parts: glacial acetic acid 5 parts) for further dissection. Then the segments were observed in glycerine jelly using a stereoscopic microscope (Olympus SZX 12). Photographs of the specimen were made using JUJAK 5.5 (DIXI 3000) digital camera. After all examinations, the genital structures were preserved in transparent plastic tubes filled with glycerine and capped the tube well, then the prepared tube was pinned under specimen.Images were produced by multi-focus system using the software Helicon Focus 5.1. Drawings were scanned with HP Scanjet 4850 and imported into Adobe Photoshop CS3 for labeling and plate composition.

Eight leafhoppers and four planthoppers species were recognized from PSTU farm. Among them two leafhoppers (Cofana spectra and Orosius orientalis) and two planthoppers (Nisia nervosa and Sardia rostrata) were newly recorded from Bangladesh. It has been keenly observed in the rice field that the population density of leafhopper Cofana spectra and planthopper Nisia nervosa were very high but their vector potentiality was not checked yet. It is highly recommended here that further research on vector potentiality of above species should be carried out in near future.
