Studies on Selection Criteria and Genetic Divergence of Aus Rice Germplasm During 2013-14

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Based on D² analysis, the varieties were grouped into seven (7) clusters ranging from 17 in cluster VII to 2 in cluster III. The inter cluster distances in all of the cases was larger than the intra cluster distance indicating presence of wider diversity among genotypes of distance groups. The intra- and inter-cluster distances ranged from 0.457 in cluster III to 1.178 in cluster I and 4.36 (between cluster VI and VII) to 11.45 (between cluster III and V), respectively which clearly indicated the presence of variability in the germplasm of different clusters. The highest cluster means for yield (12.98 g/hill) and panicle hill^-1 (no.) (14) were obtained from cluster III. The highest spikelet fertility percentage (90.04), days required to maturity (135.25) and flag leaf width (cm)(1.56) were found in cluster IV. But, maximum good characters along with higher yield were accumulated in cluster III. But it was interesting that over all performance was good in cluster VI which produced higher inter cluster-value over other clusters. Therefore, the genotypes of cluster III and VI can be used in hybridization program to produce higher yielding genotypes.

Objectives:

To estimate genetic variability, character associations and genetic relationships of Aus rice germplasm.

Methodology:

Forty-six rice genotypes of Aus season viz. Nayan tara (acc. 654), Begunbitchi (acc. 1202), Benaful (acc. 1529), Panock (acc. 1641), Langra beni (acc. 1645), Dal kaisha (acc. 564), Garia (acc. 569), Marik madhu (acc. 572), Shoni (acc. 575), Porangi (7) (acc. 1216), Paik juta (acc. 1528), Hasha (acc. 1534), Batnuri (acc. 1550), Chiknal (acc. 1642), Parangi (acc. 1689), Haitai saeta (acc. 1691), Holat (acc. 1556), Mory saita (acc. 1626), Ajabbeti (acc. 1546), Rang mahal (acc. 1629), Lakhi jhota (acc. 1630), Katar (acc. 1632), Bolium (acc. 1205), Laxmi lota (acc. 1211), Pankhiraj (acc. 1700), Noroi (4) (acc. 1210), Kamini sail (acc. 1662), Baismagur (acc. 1696), Sribalium (acc. 1699), Saita (acc. 1213), Manik moda (acc. 1323), Tepakain (acc. 1532), Bnamka (acc. 1549), Kali bokri (1) (acc. 1633), Ingra (acc. 1643), Lal galong (acc. 1655), Mele (acc. 1671), Gori saita (acc. 1675), Goyal (acc. 1680), Saita (acc. 1681), Kala manic (acc. 1682), Koe juri (acc. 1683), Kautuk moni (acc. 1684), Korcha muri (acc. 1687), Boilam (acc. 1688) and Manik mendal (acc. 1692), selected from the Rice Genebank of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur were grown under irrigated condition for genetic divergence study. The germplasm were grown with three replications using one row of 5.4 m long each per entry and single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 X 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively. Fertilizers were applied @ 80:10:60 kg NPK/ha. Control measures for pests, diseases and weed were taken whenever necessary. Fourteen morpho-agronomic and yield contributing characters viz. flag leaf length (cm), flag leaf width (cm), plant height (cm), days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, panicle/hill(no.), panicle length (cm), filled grains/panicle, unfilled grains/panicle, grain length (mm), grain breadth (mm), length-breath ratio, 1000 grain weight (g) and yield/hill (g) were recorded to study the genetic diversity. Mahalonobis’ D² and Canonical Vector Analysis methods were used to group the varieties based on their yield contributing and ancillaries characters using GENSTAT 5.13 program in computer.

Based on D² analysis, maximum entries (17) were grouped into the cluster VII followed by eleven in cluster II, five in cluster I, four in cluster IV and VI, three in V and two in cluster III. The intra-cluster distances were low for all the clusters indicated homogeneous nature of the genotypes within the clusters. Cluster V produced higher inter-cluster distances with maximum clusters. Moderate inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster II and IV (9.116), followed by cluster II and III (9.114), cluster V and VII (8.509), cluster I and III (8.451), cluster I and V (8.422), cluster II and VI (8.399), cluster I and VI (7.869). The highest cluster means for yield (12.98 g/hill) and panicle hill^-1 (14) were obtained from cluster III. The highest spikelet fertility percentage (90.04), days required to maturity (135.25) and flag leaf width (1.56 cm) were found in cluster IV while the lowest mean value for yield, plant height (cm), flag leaf length (cm), panicle hill^-1(no.), panicle length (cm), grain shape and highest mean value for 1000-grain weight (g) were found in cluster V. The result also revealed that short growth duration varieties (121.76) were clubbed into cluster VII whereas highest panicle length (26.90 cm), plant height (155.20 cm) and grain breadth (2.27 mm) rice were obtained from cluster VI.
