Abstract/ Executive Summary:

There is very little scope to increase the area under rice cultivation rather there is a great demand to release some land for non-rice crops to meet the diversified needs of the farmers. So, it is essential to increase the productivity of rice including utilization of fallow period. Soil of Barisal region is suitable for legume crops as well as mustard. Farmers produce mungbean to meet their family need as well as to earn some additional income. Mustard is one of the most important oilseed crops in Bangladesh. BARI has developed high yielding and pest and diseases resistant mustard varieties which are agro economically suitable and profitable for Barisal site. The highest rice equivalent yield (9.92t/ha) was obtained from Mustard (BARI Sarisha-14)-Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan44) followed by Mungbean (BARI Mug-6)-Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan44) and Mungbean (BARI Mug-5)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota). The lowest was found in existing Fallow-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota) cropping pattern.

Objectives:

To validate different cropping patterns by introducing high yielding variety of mungbean and mustard.
To increase the productivity of rice by replacing local variety with high yielding varieties.
To increase land productivity by introducing new crops in the existing pattern.
To increase overall farm income.

Methodology:

To increase total productivity of the land, BRRI dhan44, mungbean and mustard were introduced in their existing cropping pattern with the objectives, the trial was conducted in 6 disperse field at Chakhar union of Banaripara upazila. Mustard and mungbean were introduced in the fallow period. Date of seeding, transplanting, weeding, fertilizer application and harvesting as well as yield data were also collected for all these crops. The following treatments were included in this trial. Existing pattern: Fallow-Fallow -T. Aman (Sadamota) and Improved pattern: Mungbean (BARI Mug-6)-Fallow-T. Aman (BRRI dhan44), Mustard (BARI Sarisha-14)-Fallow-T. Aman (Mungbean (BARI Mug-5)-Fallow-T. Aman (Sadamota).
