Performance of Different Organic Management and Biological Means Against Bacterial Leaf Blight (blb) of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Management of bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease of rice was done taking into account five treatments to get more economic profit in the field under Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (X.o.o) inoculated condition. The treatments were potassium, poultry litter, ashes, leaf clipping with and without avirulent isolate of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae. The treatments were used to find out suitable eco-friendly management practices for more economic profit. Among the treatments poultry litter and ash reduced BLB severities and increased grain yield. The highest reduction of lesion lengths over control plants was observed on plants grown in poultry litter (26.61%) followed by potassium (23.14%) amended soil. Poultry litter increased 46.15% grain yield followed by potassium fertilizer which increased 40.70% grain yield than control plants.

Objectives:

To know the performance of different organic management and biological means against bacterial leaf blight (BLB) of rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. Six treatments were used in this study. The treatments were as follows;

T₁ = Potassium (K₂0)

T₂ = Poultry litter

T₃ = Ash

T₄ = Leaf clipping without inoculum

T₅ = Leaf clipping with Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (avirulent strain)

T₆ = Control. (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae)

The avirulent strain of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (X.o.o.) was collected from the culture stock of Plant Pathology division, BINA, Mymensingh. The bacterial leaf blight infected plants were collected from Agronomy Field Laboratory, BAU, Mymensingh and pieces of samples were placed in peptone water for ooze outing. Then the bacterial ooze outed was streaked on Nutrient Agar (NA) plates to isolate virulent strain of X.o.o. The concentrations with both inocula were adjusted to 10⁸ CFU/ml prior to inoculation.

The inoculation was done by clipping method. Randomly selected three subplots were inoculated with avirulent strain of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae at early tillering stage and all the experimental rice plants were randomly inoculated with the virulent strain of X.o.o. at flag leaf stage for pathogenicity test. Leaf clipping without inoculation of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae was done in the previous way described.

Poultry litter and ash were applied @ 4.5 t/ha at 30 days after transplanting (DAT) and additional potassium fertilizer (40 kg/ha) was applied as top dressing during the maximum tillering stage of rice growth.

BLB severities (lesions length) were measured after two and three weeks of leaf clipping. The lesion lengths were measured from the point of inoculation. The crop was harvested at its fully matured stage. The data for the important agronomic parameters such as healthy filled grain/panicle, spotted grain/panicle, unfilled grain/panicle, yield/ m² were recorded after harvesting in order to determine the effects of the bacterial inoculum on yield and its components of rice.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the treatments, poultry litter followed by potassium fertilizer gave the highest grain yield in rice where flag leaf inoculation was done with the virulent Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae. So, the application of poultry litter, ash and other potassium containing manuares should be emphasized. The results are very interesting and need further study using more number of rice cultivars with different levels of resistance or susceptibility against BLB.
