Response of Aromatic Modern Rice to Nitrogen Under Transplant Condition in Wet Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur in wet season. BR5, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 were tested with 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg N ha ^-1to determine optimum N level for higher yield. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted on 15 August at 20- x 15 cm both in 1999 and 2000. Plant height, tiller number, dry matter production, panicle number, spikelet sterility and straw yield increased with increased N levels in both the years. For cultivation of aromatic fine rice the optimum N level was 73 kg ha^-1in wet season. However, the estimated optimum N level was 66, 45, 80 and 81 kg ha^-1for higher grain yield with BR5, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38, respectively. Higher N rates caused crop lodging after flowering resulting in increased spikelet sterility and decreased grains panicle^-1. The test variety BRRI dhan38 gave 25% higher grain yield than BRRI dhan34 but comparable with others.

Objectives:

To determine the response and appropriate rate of N for modern aromatic rice varieties in wet season.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research, Gazipur. BR5, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 were grown with 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg N ha^-1 in An^-tan season of 1999 and 2000. The treatments were distributed in a split-plot design, placing N in the main plot and varieties in the sub-plot. Soil samples were collected from the experimental field at a depth of 0-15 cm before fertilizer application. The collected soil samples were used for analysis of initial soil nutrient status. The soil of the experimental area was clay loam that contained the total N 0.09 %, organic carbon 0.95 and available phosphorus 10 (ppm). Fertilizers other than N were applied @ 16-7-10-4 kg P, K, S and Zn ha ¹, respectively as triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulfate during final land preparation. Thirty-day-old 2-3 seedlings hill^-' were transplanted on 15 August at 20 x 15 cm. Nitrogen as urea was top-dressed in three equal splits at 15 dates after transplanting (DAT), 30 DAT and at 5 days before panicle initiation stage. The crop field was kept weed free by three hand weeding at 15, 30 and 45 DAT. Five destructive sample hills were collected from each plot out side of the harvested area to measure plant height, tiller number and dry matter at different growth stages. Dry matter was determined after oven drying at 40^°C for 72 hours. Grain yield was recorded from five square meter areas and was adjusted to 14% moisture content. Straw yield was recorded after sun drying. Optimum N dose was determined by regressing grain yield with applied N rates. Functional relationship between N dose and rice yields was described by the quadratic equation, Y = a + bN + cN² where, Y is estimated rice yield (kg ha^-1), N being dose (kg ha^-1), a is intercept, b and c are coefficients. The estimated N dose for maximum yield will be at the point of N = -b/2c and economic optimum N dose is E = 1-b*En / 2c* En, where E = economic optimum N dose, En = PRIM; where, PR is price of rice and PN is price of N. Price of paddy is Tk.12.00 kg^- I and price of N is Tk. 14.00 kg^-1 (Urea Tk. 6.50 kg^- ¹). The grain and straw samples were dried in the sun and grinned in a machine and then analyzed by following standard procedures (IRRI, 1994). Nuptake was calculated from the product of grain and straw dry weight and percentage of N content.

Achievement/Findings:

The number panicles and spikelet sterility increased significantly with the increase of N levels Profused tillering were observed with higher N levels but many of them were unproductive. The unproductive tillers increased competition for nutrients and solar energy with productive tillers that hampered grain development. However, the number of grains panicle' increased with the increment of N rates up to 50 kg N ha^-1 and then declined in both the years. The lowest number of grains panicle' was observed at the highest N level due to crop lodging that increased empty spikelet.
