The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensigh, during the rabi season 2006 to 2007 to study the effects of compost on the yield and yield components of lentil. The compost made from Mimosa invisa, Sesbania rostrata and water hyacinth and the lentil varieties BINA masur 2, BARI masur 3 and BARI masur 4 were included in the study. The result showed that the varieties differed significantly in number of branches plant", number of filled and sterile pods plant", number of total pods plant", number of seeds pod", number of seeds plant", 1000 seed weight, straw yield ha", biological yield ha-l and harvest index except plant population m-2 and seed yield ha-l. The highest seed yield was produced by the variety BARI masur 4 (725.00 kg ha-l) and the lowest by BARI masur 3 (654.17 kg ha-l). In case of compost, number of branches plant", number of filled pods and total pods plant" and number of seeds plant" varried significantly among themselves. Other yield components and yield were found to be insignificant with the application of compost made from different materials. However, apparently the highest grain yield (733.33 kg ha') was obtained from the application of Mimosa compost followed by water hyacinth and Sesbania composts. No significant differences were found due to interaction of variety and compost on yield and yield components of lentil except the number of filled and total pods plant". The highest seed yield was produced by BARI masur 4 (750.00 kg ha') with the application of water hyacinth compost. Thus from the result of the experiment it may be concluded that any type of compost may be used for the production of lentil irrespective of varieties.

To see the effects of different types of compost on the growth, yield and yield components of lentil varieties

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from November 2006 to March 2007. The land was medium high having sandy loam soil and belongs to Sonatola series under the noncalcareous dark-grey floodplain soil of Old Brahmaputra floodplain AEZ-9 (UNDP and FAa, 1998). The soil pH was 6.5Three lentil varieties (I. BINA masur 2, II. BAR masur 3, III. BARI masur 4) and three types of composts (I. Water hyacinth, II. Sesbania rostrata III. Mimosa in visa) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. The land was manured and mixed well with the compost prepared from Sesbania rostrata, Mimosa invisa and water hyacinth @ 15 tons ha -I, respectively. Seeds of lentil were sown continuously in lines of 25 ern apart at the rate of 45 kg ha-I and covered with soil by hand. The crop was grown under rainfed condition. After the emergence of seedlings, thinning was done and foot rot disease was controlled by spraying Cupravit @ 3.5 kg ha-I during the growing period. Two hand weedings were done to control weeds. The crop was harvested at full maturity, the harvested crop was brought to the threshing floor and dried in the sun for three days .The seeds and straw were separated and cleaned The cleaned seeds were dried in sun for 3-4 consecutive days. The seed yield was adjusted at 12 % moisture level. The data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 5 randomly selected plants from each plot. Seed yield and straw yield were recorded from individual plot and were converted to hectare basis. The data were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance with the help of computer package MSTAT and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Ranged Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

It may be concluded that the variety BARI masur 4 performed the best in respect of grain yield of lentil with water hyacinth compost. However, to draw a definite conclusion further studies are needed to be carried out in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh
