Effect of Crop Establishment Methods on the Performance of Transplanted Aman Rice in North-western Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Rangpur to observe the performances of crop establishment methods during Aman 2004 and 2005 seasons. System of rice intensification (SRI), BRRI recommended conventional transplanting, Bolan (double transplanting), seedling throwing and wet-direct seeded rice by drum seeder methods were used for crop establishment. The SRI method produced about 1.60 t ha ^-1higher grain yield than Bolan and wet-direct seeded rice by drum seeder method. The highest number of panicle was observed from the wet-direct seeded rice by drum seeder method in both seasons. The SRI method produced significantly higher number of filled grains panicle ^-1in both the seasons. Tillers deteriorating trend was less in SRI than other methods. The SRI and wet-direct seeded rice by drum seeder took less time for maturation than other planting methods, although field duration was higher.

Objectives:

The study was under taken to observe the performances of different crop establishment methods, especially SRI in light textured soil in Aman season.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BRRI regional station, Rangpur during Aman 2004 and 2005 seasons. BRRI recommended conventional transplanting, SRI, Bolan, seedling throwing and wet direct seeded rice by drum seeder seedling number hill^-1 were 20- x 20-cm and 2-3, respectively. Water was kept 3-4 cm depth from transplanting to ripening of the crop. System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method. In this method, 12-day-old seedlings were transplanted at 25- x 25-cm spacing on 3rd week of July. Single seedling hill^-1 was transplanted carefully within half an hour after uprooting at 1-2 cm depth. Saturated field condition was maintained up to before panicle initiation (PI) stage. A thin layer of water (2-3 cm) was maintained in the field at PI stage until 10-15 days before harvest. Bolan method. Seeding was done very densely in last week of May in upland situations, which is called Bichonbari. First transplanting was done on medium highland in 1st-2nd week of June with very closer spacing (60-70 hills m^-2) and higher number of seedlings (6-8 hill^-1) which is known as Bolan Bari. One hill of Bolan Bari divided into 3 to 4 times and the second transplanting was done in the main field with in July with closer spacing (27-30 hill m^-2), which is known as Dhanbari. Seedling throwing: Thirty- to day-old seedlings were thrown in field. There was no standing water during throwing. On the same day similar amount of seedlings were used for conventional transplanting method. Irrigation was not applied within 3 days after seedling throwing. Wet DSR by drum seeder. Four-day-old sprouted seeds were sown on well drained and level land using the single thick row of drum seeder on 3rd Adequately sprouted seeds were air dried in shade for about two hours before sowing.

Achievement/Findings:

Although yield difference between BRRI and SRI methods was no significant, SRI method gave 4.11 t ha^-1 grail yield, which was about 1.66 t ha ^-1and 1.56 t ha^-1 higher than Bolan and WDSR by drum seeder method, respectively. Higher grain yield was obtained by SRI method due to the contribution of other yield contributing factor.
