A pot experiment was conducted to find out the effects of Water hyacinth and Mimosa on yield of aman rice and soil. The pots were arranged in CRD with 16 treatments and 3 replications. Previously oven dried and ground green biomass (Water hyacinth and Mimosa) were applied @ 0, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 t ha-1 along with two levels of fertilizer N (50 and 100 kg ha-1). N50+7.5 t ha-1 Mimosa increased grain and straw yield of BRRI dhan 33. Water hyacinth showed lower performance in respect of growth and yield contributing characters than did by Mimosa. In grain, the maximum concentration of N, protein content, K, and S was obtained in treatment receiving N50+7.5 t ha-1 Mimosa while the highest P content was observed by N100+7.5 t ha-1  Mimosa. The treatments had no significant effect on Ca concentration in grain. The highest N, K, Ca, Mg and S uptake by rice grain was recorded in treatment receiving N50+7.5 t ha-1 Mimosa. N100 +7.5 t ha-1 Mimosa influenced the maximum uptake of P by grain. Individual effect of treatments on nutrient content of soil was significant. The maximum amount of organic C, total N and available P were recorded in N50+7.5 t ha-1  Mimosa treated soil while the highest available S content was obtained from the soil receiving N100+7.5 t ha-1 Mimosa. The maximum exchangeable K was found in soil amend with N50+7.5 t ha-1 Water hyacinth. The control left minimum residual effect on soil. Among the treatments used in this study, N50+7.5 t ha-1  Mimosa contributed higher yield and yield contributing characters of rice cv. BRRI dhan 33, though Water hyacinth also responded positively over control. Both the green manures improved organic matter content and nutrients of the soil compared to chemical fertilizer and control.

To evaluate the performance of leguminous (Mimosa) and non-leguminous (Water hyacinth) green biomass on the yield and yield attributes of T. aman rice cv. BRRI dhan 33 and the efficiency of this green manuring is increasing OM content and nutrient status of soil.

A pot experiment was carried out in the net house of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from August 2003 to November 2003. BRRI dhan 33 was used as test crop. The soil used in experiment was silt loam in texture having pH 6.5, 1.21% organic matter, 0.12% total N, 12.09 mg g-1 soil Available P, 0.16 me 100 g -1  soil Exchangeable K and 9.12mg g-1  soil Available S. The experiment comprised of 16 treatments. All the green biomass were applied @ 0, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 t ha-1 along with two levels of fertilizer N (50 and 100kg ha-1). The whole amount of various green manures and TSP and MOP (Recommended dose) were applied during final pot preparation. Urea was applied in three equal splits. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the experimental pots on 21 August, 2003. Four seedlings were transplanted in each pot. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested on l9 November, 2003. Grain and straw yields, other yield contributing characters and post harvest soil samples were recorded from each pot. Rice grain was chemically analyzed for the determination of total N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, protein and starch content and soil chemical analysis was done for the determination of total N,P,K,S and Organic carbon. Total nitrogen and Phosphorus was determined. Potassium was determined by flame photometer method. Calcium and Magnesium were determined by complexometric method of titration (Page et al. 982). Soil organic carbon by Wet oxidation method (Walkley and Black 1955). Data were analyzed with the help of MSTAT-C developed by Russel(1986). Mean differences adjudged by least significance difference (LSD) test

Natural weeds could be used as green manure in rice cultivation. Mimosa invisa appeared to be more promising green manure compared to water hyacinth for the cultivation of T. aman rice cv. BRRI dhan 33. 30% of the recommended inorganic nitrogenous fertilizer could be compensated if rice is grown after the incorporation of M. invisa @ 7.5 t ha-1.
