An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from July to December 2004 to find out the efficiency and economics of different cultural and chemical methods of weed control in transplanted aman rice cv. BRRI dhan32. Weed control treatments included in the study were no weeding. one hand weeding (HW). two HW, one HW + one weeding with Japanese Rice weeder (JRW). Rifit @ 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and 1.25 L ha-1 and Ronstar @1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 L ha-1 Important weed species found to infest the crop were Angta (Panicum repens), Acid ghash (Ammania baccifera), Nakphul (Cyperus difformis), Khudey Shama (Echinochloa colonum) and Panikachu (Monochoria vaginalis). Shama (Echinochloa crusgalli) was the least important weed species. The higher doses of Rifit @ 1.25 L ha-1 and Ronstar @ 2.5 L ha-1showed the best performance in reducing weed density and weed dry weight. The highest grain yield (5.04 t ha-1) was obtained from the application of Ronstar @ 2_0 L ha-1 which was statistically identical with the second highest grain yield (4.93 t ha-1) obtained from the application of Rifit @ 1.0 L ha-1. The highest net income of Tk. 38915 ha-1 was obtained from Ronstar @ 2.0 L ha-1and the next highest of Tk. 38603 from Rifit @ 1.0 L ha-1

To study the efficiency and economics of different cultural and chemical methods of weed control in transplanted aman rice.

The experiment was conducted in well-drained medium high land at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from July to December 2004. The experiment consisted of twelve weed control treatments such as no weeding, 1 hand weeding (HW) at 21 days after transplanting (DAT), 2 HW (one at 21 DAT and another at 42 DAT), 1 HW at 21 DAT + one weeding with Japanese rice weeder (JRW) at 42 DAT, Rifit (Pretilachlor, a systemic, pre-emergence and selective herbicide for rice) @ 0.5,0.75, 1.0 and 1.25 L ha-1 applied at 4 DAT mixing with 250 L water by Knapsack sprayer and Ronstar (Oxadiazon, a systemic, pre-emergence and selective herbicide for rice) @ 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 I ha' was applied at 4 DAT mixing with 500 L water. Both the herbicides were used in presence of 4-5 cm standing water. The experiment was laid, out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The size of unit plot was 4.0m x 2.5m. The treatments were arranged in the unit plot at random. BRRI dhan32, a modern variety of rice, was used as the test crop. " The experimental plot was first opened with a Power' tiller and then puddled thoroughly by ploughing and cross ploughing with a country 'plough and subsequently leveled by laddering. The experimental plots were fertilized with urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP) gypsum and zinc sulphate at the rate of 150, 100, 70, 60 and 10 kg ha", respectively. The whole amount of all the fertilizers except urea was applied in the unit plots at the time of final land preparation and thoroughly incorporated with soil with the help of spade. Urea was top dressed in three equal splits on 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (BRRI, 2000). Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted on 7 August 2004. Two seedlings were transplanted in each hiIl maintaining a spacing of 25 cm x 15cm. Weeding was done as per experimental treatments. All the necessary intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested at full maturity on 17 November 2004. Five hills were randomly selected and uprooted from each plot prior to harvest and data were recorded on different crop characters. Data on weed density were recorded from each plot at flowering stage of the rice plants by using 0.5m xO.5m quadrate as described by Curz et al. (1986). Weed control efficiency (WCE) was calculated using the following formula developed by Sawant and Jadhav (1985)-

From the result of the study, it may be stated from economic point of view that when labour is a limiting factor, herbicide may serve as an alternative means of weed control and Ronstar @ 2.0 L ha-' and Rifit @ 1.0 L ha-' were equally effective and economic than other weed control treatments in producing high yield in transplanted aman rice.
