Observation of Water Quality Parameters of Culture Ponds at Patuakhali Science and Technology University Campus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Water quality parameters were observed i n six ponds of Patuakhali Science and Technology University namely Nilkamal , Lalkamal , Salsabil , Tarangotanu, Jol poddo and Nilpoddo from July 2010 to June 201 1. No significant (p>0.05) differences were observed for tem perature, pH and dissolved oxygen among these ponds. In case of ammonia highest amount (2.24 ppm) was recorded in Tarangotanu followed by 0.58, 0.59, 0.57, 0.54 and 0.50 ppm in Nilkamal , Lalkamal, Salsabil , Jolpoddo and Nilpoddo respectively and was significantl y (p<0.05) different from others. Total alkalinity and total hard ness were also found significantly differences in Tarangotanu and Jolpoddo respectively from others. The recorded water quality parameters of all ponds were found to be in optimum ranges and thus indicated suitable for fish culture in those ponds.

Objectives:

1. To observe the water quality parameters of ponds.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out from July 2010 to June 2011 in six ponds namely as Nil kamal , Lalkamal , Salsabil , Tarangotanu, Jolpoddo and Nilpoddo situated at PSTU. The area of Nilkamal, Lal kamal, Salsabil, Tarangotanu, Jolpoddo and Nilpoddo were 64, 99, 162, 50, 62 and 68 decimal respectively and depth were 7, 7, 8, 7, 7 and 7 feet respectively. A number of water quality parameters such as water temperature (°C), dissolved oxygen (mgL^{- 1} ), pH, ammonia ( mgL^{- 1} ), total hard ness (mgL^{- 1} ) and total al kalinity (mgL^{- 1} ) were measu red weekly. Temperature, pH and d issolved oxygen were measured on the spot and rests of the above parameters were measured at Fisheries Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries, PSTU . Water samples were collected between 8.00 to 9:00 am from each pond surface to a depth of 20 cm. Water temperature (°C) During the study period, water tem peratu re was recorded wi th the hel p of a thermometer. Dissolved oxygen (mgl^-1) The dissol ved oxygen of water was measured by using a portable digital DO meter (YSI, model 58) on the spot. pH pH of pond water was determined by a direct reading digital pH meter. Ammonia (mgl^-1 , Total Alkalinity (mgl^-1) and Total Hardness (mgl^-1) During the study period, water samples were collected in a plastic beaker and brought to the laboratory. Ammonia, total alkalinity and total hardness were determined with the help of respective HANNA test kit. Statistical analysis For the statistical analysis of data, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukeys Test was performed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science, version - 12.0). Significance was assigned at the 5% level.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the mean values of water quality parameters , the result of this study revealed that the selected ponds of PSTU campus were very suitable for fish culture except Tarangotanu.
