Improvement of Productivity of Single Boro Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To increase the cropping intensity and productivity of the existing single boro cropping system by the inclusion of fish in fallow period of Aman season and to increase the total productivity of land by replacing local rice variety with high yielding variety, this study was conducted at Chakhar and Boliarkathi of Banaripara of Barisal dostrict during 2012-13. Treatment was: Existing pattern: Boro (Vojon)-Fallow-Fallow and Improved pattern: Boro (BRRI dhan47)-Fallow-Fish (Carp). Yield of BRRI dhan47 was 5.38 t/ha higher than local variety, vojon. Rice equivalent yield of existing pattern was 4.40 t/ha compared to 22.26 t/ha in improved pattern. Higher rice equivalent yield was obtained due to replacement of local variety with high yielding variety and inclusion of fish in fallow period of the cropping pattern.

Objectives:

Methodology:

There are some low lands with single boro rice in Barisal region. This type of land has the potentiality of fish cultivation that can increase the systems productivity significantly. Hence, an attempt was initiated with four dispersed field trials conducted at Chakhar and Boliarkathi of Banaripara of Barisal dostrict during 2012-13. Date of seeding, fingerling release, transplanting, weeding, fertilizer application and harvesting along with yield data were collected. Fingerlings rearing technologies were provided to the farmers. Treatment was: Existing pattern: Boro (Vojon)-Fallow-Fallow and Improved pattern: Boro (BRRI dhan47)-Fallow-Fish (Carp).
