A field experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during January to April 2009 to study the comparative effects of Bradyrhizobium and urea-N on nodulation and N content and uptake of soybean (Glycine max). The soil was silty loam in texture having pH 7.1. The seven treatments were T1: control, T2: BAU 107, T3: BAU 151, T4: TAL 102, T5: Mixed Bradyrhizobium culture, T6: urea-N and T7: Mixed Bradyrhizobium culture +Mg. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design having three replications. Phosphorus, potassium and sulphur were applied as basal dose from TSP, MOP and gypsum @ 10 kg P ha-1, 20 kg K ha -1 and 5 kg S ha-1, respectively. Mg @ 10 kg ha-1 from magnesium oxide was applied in the treatment T7 receiving mixed Bradyrhizobium strains. Data were recorded at 45 and 80 days after sowing on nodulation. Nodules, grain and stover were analysed for N. Bradyrhizobial inoculation significantly increased the nodule number, nodule dry weight, N content and uptake of soybean plant in all treatments over uninoculated control. Bradyrhizobium inoculation also significantly increased the nodulation and N-content compared to control. The strain TAL 102 was found to be the best in terms of nodulation, N content and uptake of soybean.  Application of Mg with Bradyrhizobium strains was found beneficial on nodulation and N- content in soybean.

To see the effect of different Bradyrhizobium strains and urea-N on nodulation, nitrogen content and uptake of soybean plants.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during rabi season from January to April, 2009 to evaluate the effects of Bradyrhizobium inoculants and urea-N on nodulation and N content and uptake of soybean. The soil was silty loam in texture having pH 7.1. The 7 treatments were follows: T1 =Control, T2 = BAU 107, T3 = BAU 151, T4 = TAL 102, T5 = Mixed culture, T6 = urea –N and T7 = Mixed culture+Mg. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having 3 replications. Phosphorus @10 kg P ha-1 from triple super phosphate (TSP), potassium @ 20 kg K ha-1 from muriate of potash (MOP) and sulphur @ 5 kg S ha-1 from gypsum were applied as basal dose. Urea @ 10 kg N ha-1 and MgO @ 10 kg Mg ha-1 were applied in T6 and T7, respectively, as per the treatments. The seeds were inoculated with the selected Bradirhyzobial strains and sown on the 1st January, 2009. Seeds were sown in the morning to avoid the direct sunlight. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The N content in nodules, grain and stover was analyzed. All the data were statistically analyzed and adjusted by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

At harvest, nitrogen content in stover increased considerably over control due to inoculation with different strains and urea-N application (Table 2). The highest nitrogen content (1.63 %) in stover was found in treatment T6 (urea-N). The treatments T4 (TAL 102), T5 (Mixed culture) and T7 (Mixed culture+ Mg) were statistically similar in terms of N content in stover. Again, the effects of T3 (BAU 151) and T7 (Mixed culture+ Mg) were also statistically similar on the stover N content of soybean.

The present study was concluded that Bradyrhizobium  and the strain TAL 102 was found to be the best in terms of nodulation, N content and uptake of soybean.  Application of Mg with Bradyrhizobium strains was found beneficial on nodulation and N- content in soybean.
