The experiment was conducted at Kalaroa, Satkhira, under AEZ 11 during 2000-01 to 2002-2003 to find out an optimum fertilizer managcment package for Boro- T. Aman cropping pattern. Three different nutrient management packages i.e. soil test based fertilizer recommendation, IPNS and FRG'97 along with farmer's practice and a no fertilizer treatment were tested. The first and second crops of the pattern were Boro and T. Aman rice respectively. The highest average yield of Boro rice was obtained from IPNS followed by farmer's practice and IPNS. Higher gross margin was obtained from IPNS and soil test based fertilizer dose for high yield goal (ED2). But marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR) over control was the highest in Fertilizer Recommendation Guide (FRG-97) due to less fertilization cost. After completion of the experimentation slightly increase ill soil lcrtility status was observed and IPNS basis nutrient management was found favourable in this regard. Considering yield cost return analysis as well as soil fertility concerns soil test based IPNS approach was found superior for Boro-T.aman cropping pattern in AEZ 11.

  1. To find out a cropping pattern based fertilizer recommendation
  2. To determine the optimum and economic use of fertilizer for Boro-T. Aman cropping pattern for high Ganges river flood plain soil (AEZ-11).

The experiment was conducted at farmer's field in Kalaroa, Satkhira during Boro and T. Aman season of 2000-01. 2001-02 and 2002-03. The fertilizer trial was conducted in the cropping pattern Boro-T. Aman. The land type was medium high land with pH value of 8.1 under high Ganges river floodplain soil of agro-ecological zones (AEZ) 11. Before establishment of the experiment the initial soil samples were collected and analyzed in the SRDI laboratory. After completion of the three years cycle, soil samples were collected and analyzed in the BINA laboratory. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four dispersed replications. Fertilizer doses were calculated according to original soil status of the experimental plots by using Fertilizer Recommendation Guide. Six different packages of fertilizers were included in the study as treatment. Fertilizer dose used by the farmers was found from an exploratory survey in the area. ED1 = Estimated inorganic fertilizer dose for moderate yield goal ED2 = Estimated inorganic fertilizer dose for high yield goal. IPNS= Integrated Plant Nutrition System basis fertilizer management for high yield goal. FRG'97=Recommended fertilizer based on FRG'97 FP= Farmers' practice. Control = Absolute control. The experiment was initiated with Boro rice. The plot size was 5 m X 3 m. Forty days old seedlings of Bora rice (var. BRII dhan28) were transplanted on January with a spacing of 25 cm X 15 cm and harvested during the last week of April. The entire quantity of P, K Sand Zn were applied as basal dose at the time of final land preparation. Cowdung at the rate of Stlha was applied 5 days before final land preparation. The source of NPK and S were urea, TSP, MP and gypsum. respectively. N was top- dressed in three equal splits viz. after seedling establishment, at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stage. Thirty-five days old seedlings of T. Aman rice (var. BRRl dhan30) were transplanted on August with a spacing of 20 cm X 15 cm and were harvested during November. Two irrigation's were completed before the first and second top dressing of N fertilizer. Weeding was done at 20 and 35 days after transplanting (DAT). Data on yield and yield attributes were recorded and analyzed statistically.

The highest rice yield as well as gross margin was obtained with IPNS basis nutrient management package. But MBCR was the highest in FRG' 97 basis fertilizer recommendation. Therefore. FRG'97 could be found suitable for small and marginal farmers. But it is apparent that IPNS is superior to other fertilizer management packages in respect of yield, gross return and gross margin as well as conserving soil fertility in the long run. Based on three years of study, it could be suggested to practice either IP S or fertilizer dose for high yield goal (ED2) for the large and medium farmers and FRG'97 for marginal and resource poor farmers for Boro- T. aman cropping pattern under AEZ-ll.
