Effect of Planting Methods and Nitrogen Rates on Yield Components and Yield of Lowland Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur during 1987 to determine the yield performance of direct-seeded and transplanted lowland rice grown with two rates of nitrogen: Direct-seeded rice produced more panicles per unit area with heavier grains while transplanted rice produced more grains per unit area due to more grains per panicle. Grain yield was the highest (5.15 t/ha) from transplanted than from direct-seeded ones. Among the two direct-seeded methods, higher grain yield (4.93 t/ha) was obtained from line sown than from broadcast sown (4.74 t/ha). Total biomass production was affected 28 to 33% by nitrogen application rather than by planting methods. Grain and straw yields were significantly increased due to application of nitrogen irrespective of planting methods.

Objectives:

The present study was therefore, undertaken to compare the yield performance of direct-seeded and transplanted rice with two rates of nitrogen.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during T. Aman season, 1987. The test location belonged to Chhiata series of the grey terrace sandy clay loam soil (Total N- 0.08%, pH 6.2). The land was opened with country plough and finally prepared by power tiller with proper levelling. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications. The two nitrogen rate-O and 120 kg/ha were in the main plot and the three planting methods-broadcast,line sowing and transplanting in the sub-plot. The unit plot size was 4 x 5m with a 25cm wide levee between plots and a 100 cm wide drain between the replicates. Pre-germinated seeds of BR545-5-1-2-I, an advanced breeding line, promising for late T. Aman was sown on August 29, 1987 evenly on the nursery bed at the rate of 100 g/m2. Forty five kg/ha sprouted seeds were sown in 25cm apart rows and 70 kg/ha seeds were broadcast in the field as per treatment. Twenty-day old seedlings were transplanted at 25 x 15cm spacing using 2 seedlings/ hill. Fertilizer was applied at 60-40-10 kg/ha of P20s, K₂0 and S, respectively. Nitrogen from urea at 120 kg N/ha was applied in three equal splits; top dressed at 15,30 & 45 days after sowing (DAS) or days after transplanting (DA T). After sowing of seed the main field was kept at soil saturation level for two weeks and then was . flooded with 3 to 5cm water until two weeks before harvest. Weeding was done as and when necessary to keep the field weed free. Four hills from each transplanted plot and all plants within the 25 x 25cm quadrates of each direct- seeded plots were uprooted and washed thoroughly with water. The samples were taken from outside the harvest area in four randomly selected spots of each plot. After oven dried for three days at 70°C, the samples were weighed. In case of transplanted crop, four hills with average number of panicle and plants within 50 x 50cm quadrates were selected randomly for direct-seeded crops. The yield components were determined from those collected samples. When about 90% of the grains in panicle became straw coloured, the crop was harvested from five square meter area from the middle of each plot. After threshing the grain and straw were sun-dried for several days and weighed. The data collected were analyzed following the standard statistical procedure.

Achievement/Findings:

From the experimental findings it can be concluded that the higher grain yield could be obtained from the transplanting rice over direct seeding irrespective of nitrogen rates.
