BRRI Gazipur-1701

Two field experiments were conducted separately in the farmers plot of Masterbari and Gachha of area, during Boro seasons of 1988-89 and 1990-91 to compare the benefits of Urea ules (USG) application over Prilled Urea (PU). In 1988-89, the doses of fertilizer were 29, 58 and 87 kg N/ha from both USG and PU whereas, in, 1990-91, the doses 58 and 87 kg N/ha. In addition, in 1990-91 Boro season, a group of 21 farmers were in BRRI project area to conduct demonstrations of both USG and PU In their own plots in have their reactions regarding the. use of USG. Each of th em were supplied with 87 kg both USG and PU along with 60-40-10 kg/ha of PZO5, K2O and S. Marginal analysis and ing techniques were used for analyzing the data. The marginal rate of return (MRR) for USG at 58 kg N/ha in both the years. Demonstration plots using USG produced at higher yield than those using PU in both the single and double crop situations. Of the rs 60% showed positive attitude for using USG over PU.

This study was therefore undertaken during Boro seasons of 1988-89 and 1990-91 to find out:

1. the impact ofUSG application on grain yield

2.the farmar's  reaction towards the acceptability of USG

The data for the present study were collected from' the exPeriments conducted at' Masterban at Gachha site of the BRRI project area, Gazipur, during 1-088-89 and 1990-91. Three differe doses of fertilizer, 29, 58 and 87 kg N/ha were applied in 1988-89 and two different doses fertilizer, 58 and 87 kg=N/ha were used in-1990-91 from both USG and PU.-Both the experimeri were set having RCB design, three replications and using the variety BR14. However, number; treatments varied within the two experiments, which can be revealed from table 2.

Marginal: analysis and partial budgeting techniques were used to compare the benefits USG applica>aio*%over PU. Average grain _yield, gross return, variable costs and gross margin each treatment were worked out. Fertilizers and labourers needed for fertilizer application we the only variable cash--costs for those treatments and rest of the costs were considered to I constant. The price` of USG was assumed to be 10% higher than that of PU. Mentionably, in ca, of PU, labourers were needed-lot its application and weeding, whereas, in case of PU, laboure were needed for its application;' weeding and fertilizer incorporation.

In addition, in 1990-91 Boro season,' a' total' of 21 demonstrations were established in ti farmer field (7 having single crop and 14 having double crop area) at 8 locations of the BR project area. Each of the farmer was supplied with 871 Cg N/ha of. both USG and PU, to condo demonstration plots, separately, along with 60-40-10 kg/ha of P205, KO and S for each of tl plot. In all the cases, the variety used was BR14. Later on, a post- harvest survey was done within the aforesaid farmers in order to have their reactions regardii the use of USG over PU. Both statistical and tabular method of-analysis were carried out to ful

In both the experiments, conducted during the Boro seasons of 1988-89 and 1990-91, the yiel of all the treatments having USG, were higher than those of PU, using similar doses of fertilit. In the 1988-89 Boro experiment, the USG application at the rate of 29 kg N produced 10 percent higher yield than thatof PU use at the rate of 29 kg N/ha. In the gar manner, use of USG at the rate of 58 kg N/ha, yielded 14 percent higher than that of PU use the rate-of 58 kg N/ha.
