Effects Rate and Split Application of Nitrogen Fertilizer on the Performance of Boro Rice Cv. BRRI Dhan29 .

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The results showed that the rate of nitrogen fertilizer had significant effect on plant height, number of effective tillers hill^-1, grain yield, biological yield and harvest index. The highest grain yield (4.83 t ha^-1) was recorded in N₂ (100 kg N ha^-1). The effect of split application of nitrogen fertilizer had significant effect in most of the plant characters except tillers plant^-1, weight of 1000 grains and harvest index. The highest grain yield (4.93 t ha^-1) was produced in S₄ (¹/₃^rddose of N applied at planting + ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 15 DAT + ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 30 DAT) treatment. The interaction effect between rate and split application of nitrogen fertilizer was found significant in most of the plant characters. The highest grain yield (5.56 t ha^-1) was recorded in N₂×S₄ (100 kg N ha^-1× ¹/₃ dose of N applied at planting + ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 15 DAT + ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 30 DAT).

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of rate and split application of nitrogen fertilizer (urea) on yield and yield attributes of BRRI dhan29.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from February 2006 to May 2006 to study the effect of different rates and split applications of nitrogen fertilizer on the performance of Boro rice cv. BRRI dhan29. The soil of the experimental field was more or less neutral in reaction with pH value 6.8, low in organic matter and fertility level. The land type was medium high with silty loam in texture. The treatment consisted of (i) three rates of nitrogen: N₁ = 50 kg N ha^-1, N₂ = 100 kg N ha^-1 and N₃ = 150 kg N ha^-1 and (ii) five split applications of nitrogen: S₁ = Full dose of N applied at planting, S₂ = Full dose of N applied at 15 Days after transplanting (DAT), S₃ = ¹/₂ dose of N applied at planting + ¹/₂ dose of N applied at 15 DAT, S₄ = ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at planting + ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 15 DAT + ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 30 DAT, and S₅ = ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 15 DAT + ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 30 DAT + ¹/₃^rddose of N applied at 45 DAT. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 4 replications. The seeds of the test crop i.e. BRRI dhan29 were collected from the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The land was fertilized with triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate to provide P, K, S and Zn, respectively. Urea was applied as per treatment specifications. Data were collected on the following crop characters: plant height, number of effective tillers hill^-1, number of non-effective tillers hill^-1, panicle length, number of grains panicle^-1, number of sterile spikelets panicle^-1, weight of 1000 grains, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index.
