Effect of Planting Time on Yield of Modern Rice Varieties In the South-east Part (chittagong) of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiment was conducted to determine the optimum planting time of three modern rice varieties at the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Hathazari, Chittagong, from 1989 to 1991. The varieties BR11, BR22 and BR23 were planted from 16 July and continued up to 7 October. In the south-eastern part (Chittagong) of Bangladesh, BRl1 can be planted up to first week of September whereas planting of BR22 and BR23 can be extended to 15-20 days later than BRll.

Objectives:

regarding their optimum planting time is still lacking. Therefore, experiments were conducted to findout the optimum planting time of modern rice varieties compared to traditional variety-Nizersail in Chittagong region.

Methodology:

Field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) farm, Hathazari, Chittagong, during T. Aman season from 1989 to 1991. The soil of the experimental site is loamy containing 0.13% total nitrogen with a pH of about 5.3. The modern varieties BR11, BR22 and BR23 were compared with locally improved Nizersail. The experiments were laidout in split-plot design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3- x 2-m.

Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 6040-40 kg N, P205 and K20 per hectare as urea, triple superphosphate and murate of

potash, respectively in all the experiments. All P and K were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. Urea was topdressed in 3 equal splits; at 15 days after transplanting, at maximum tillering stage and at the panicle initiation stage. All other cultural practices were done as and when necessary.

Transplanting started from 16 July and continued up to 7 October. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted up to 16 September at 15 days interval using 2-3 seedlings/hill at 25- x 15-cm spacing. On the other hand, 45-day-old seedlings were planted from 22 September to 7 October with an interval of 7 days using 5-6 seedlings/hill at 20- x 15-cm spacing. The mature crop in an area of 5 m² at the centre of each plot was harvested for grain yield data. The grains were hand threshed and grain yield data were taken after moisture adjustment at 14%.

Achievement/Findings:

Figure 1 presents the results. All the tested modern rice varieties produced higher grain

yield than the check variety Nizersail in the earlier planting dates.

The variety BR11 produced satisfactory grain yield (3.50-4.8 t/ha) up to 1 September planting and then the yield declined sharply. The modern varieties, BR22 (3.82-5.06 t/ha) and BR23 (3.78-4.48 t/ha) gave consistently higher grain yield up to 22 September. These varieties gave about 3.5 t/ha yield when planted on 22 September in 1990 and 1991. But about 1.5 t/ha lower yield was produced in 1989 by both the varieties on the same planting date, might be due to very low temperature.

July planted BR11 produced higher grain yield than BR22 and BR23. But in later plantings (August-September), BR22 and BR23 performed better. It was observed that rate of yield reduction after 15 September was higher in BR11 than BR22 and BR23 and the yield reduction rate in percentages were 44, 6 and 18 for variety BR11, BR22 and BR23, respectively. Gomosta et al. (1989) reported that BR11 had higher yield reduction than BR22 and Nizersail with one day delay in transplanting after 15 September.
