Yleld and Water Relations of Cabbage Under Differential Watering and Nitrogen Fertilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The cabbage cultivars, K-K cross was grown in Grey Terrace Soil of Joydebpur under Jour levels of irrigation (irrigation at 0.30. 0.45 and 0.60 bar tension and meeting ET demand) and three levels of nitrogen (0, 50 and 100 kg N/ha). The yield increased significantly with decreasing soil moisture tension down to 0.30 bar which was identical to that of irrigation meeting evapotranspiration (ET) demand. Significant yield response to nitrogen fertilization was obtained upto 100 kg N / ha. The interaction effect of watering and nitrogen fertilization on yield was also significant. The total water expense of cabbage varied from 20 to 33 em. The water expense efficiency [or the irrigation levels either meeting ET or at 0.30 bar were maximum which was improved at higher levels of nitrogen fertilization.

Objectives:

The present work was undertaken to study the yield and water relations of cabbage under differential watering and nitrogen fertilization

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the central research station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur. Important soil properties of the experimental location pertinent to the present study were determined in the field and laboratory. The cabbage cultivar. K-K cross was used as the test crop. The experimental treatments were composed of four irrigation and three nitrogen levels. Those were as follows: Levels of irrigation: I₁ = irrigation at 0.60 bar soil moisture tension (SMT) I₂= irrigation at 0.45 bar SMT I₃ = irrigation at 0.30 bar SMT l_ET = irrigation just meeting evapotranspiration (ET) demand. Levels of nitrogen: N_o = without application of nitrogen N₅₀ = 50 kg N/ha from urea. N₁₀₀ = 100 kg Nlha from urea The experimental design was a split-plot where irrigation and nitrogen levels were assigned in the main-plots and sub-plots respectively. The unit plot size was 2m X 4.5m which accommodated 50 plants at spacings 60 em from row to row and 45 cm from plant to plant. Irrigations were given in plots with 11. 12 and 13 treatments on the basis of daily tensiometer reading. In the plots with the treatment l_ET_. irrigations were given meeting the evapotranspirations (ET) demand of the crop. The ET rates for different growth stages were calculated by modified Penman's equation (Annonymous. 1977) using average climatic data of Joydebpur for ten years. The required amount of water in the l_ET plots were applied at an interval of 15 days. In determining the amount of irrigation water. rainfall and available soil water in the root zone were deducted from the values obtained on the basis of ET. Nitrogenous fertilizer was applied in three equal splits fortnightly after planting. The crop received a basal application of 80 kg P₂0₅ from TSP, 60 kg K₂0 from MP and 20 kg S from gypsum. The transplanting of 30 day old seedlings were done on November 7 and the crop was harvested on February 14 when the heads were firm. Total water expense was calculated using the water balance equation of Rose (1966) and water expense efficiency was determined.

Thus. it may be concluded from the present study that irrigation the cabbage field either meeting ET demand or at 0.30 bar SMT along with 100 kg N/ha might be optimal for the crop In respect of yield and water expense efficiency. However. more site specific information would be necessary before a general recommendation about irrigation requirement based on the Penmenn's formula is established.
