Leaf Consumption by Larva and Adult of Podontia 14-punctata L. (coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Feeding on Hog-plum

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in the laboratory of entomology department of Patuakhali Science and Technology University to determine the leaf consumption by immature and adult stages of hog-plum beetle, Podontia 14-punctata. The results revealed that the leaflet consumption by different larval instars after 24 hours on weight basis ranged from 0.106 g to 0.916 g. The highest leaflet consumption (0.916 g) was recorded in 4^th instar larva and the lowest (0.106 g) was in 1^st instar larva. Leaflet consumed by different larvae after 24 hours on area basis ranged from 28.40 to 203.60 mm² with the highest (203.60 mm²) in 4^th instar larva and lowest (28.40 mm²) in 1^st instar larva. The leaflet consumption by male adult on weight basis ranged from 0.00g to 0.49g with an average leaf weight consumption of 0.25g. The leaflet consumption ranged from 0 mm² to 327 mm² with a mean leaf area consumption of 100.90 mm²on area basis. In case of female adult, the range of leaflet consumption on weight and area basis was 0.00 - 1.50g and 0 – 1194 mm², respectively. The average leaf weight and area consumed by female was 0.58g and 390.80 mm².

Objectives:

To quantify leaf consumption by larvae and adults of hog-plum beetle on area and weight basis.

Methodology:

The experiment on hog-plum beetle, Podontia 14-punctata was carried out in entomology laboratory, PSTU, Patuakhali during April to September, 2012. The experiment was set in a room temperature of 32±⁰C and relative humidity of 85±5% with a 14 ± 2:10±2 light and dark cycle (L:D) following CRD.

Leaflet consumption by larvae, male and female adults

The leaflet consumption by different instars of the larvae of P. 14-punctata was measured in terms of leaflet weight (g) and area. Ten plastic pots were used in this experiment. Fresh hog-plum leaflets with uniform age and thickness were collected from the tree. The leaflet was placed at the bottom of the plastic pot in an erect condition. To maintain uniform ages and thickness of leaflets the sixth leaflets from the tip of the twigs were selected to feed the larvae. Sands and soil mixture (1:1) was placed at the base of the pot and maintained a thickness of 3 cm for pupation.The weight of leaflets was taken using electronic balance before placing them in the pot for feeding. Single newly hatched larva was placed in each pot and was covered with a piece of mosquito net. Larval moults and eating pattern of the larvae were recorded. Fresh leaflets were provided regularly by replacing the previous one. Daily (for 24 hours; on weight basis) leaflet consumption was determined by the differences of weight of leaflets recorded before and after feeding for each larval instar. The quantity (for 24 hours; on area basis) of leaflet consumption by larvae was also determined by using square mm graph paper. Feeding pattern of the male and female beetles was observed. The leaflet consumption for 24 hours on weight and area bases was determined by the differences of weight of leaflets recorded before and after feeding for each male and female adult beetle.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results it may be concluded that the highest leaflet consumption was recorded in 4^th instar larva and the lowest was in 1^st instar larva on both weight and area basis. In case of adult beetles, the average quantity of leaf (on weight and area basis) consumed by female was greater than those of male.
