The experiment was conducted to examine the carbon (C) mineralization pattern and rate of C sequestration of bioslurry and manures under aerobic and anaerobic soil conditions. Two bioslurries (cowdung and poultry manure) and their original manures (cowdung and poultry manure) @ 3, 5, 10 and 20 t ha-1, respectively were thoroughly mixed with soil and incubated in aerobic and anaerobic moisture condition for 16 weeks. Amount of C mineralization was determined by CO2 evolution method. Cumulative C mineralization by bioslurry of either cowdung or poultry manure was always lower compared to their original states. Lower cumulative C mineralization was recorded in poultry manure source compared to cowdung. C mineralization showed a sudden peak within 1-2 weeks thereafter progressive increase upto 4 to 5 weeks in aerobic condition whereas in anaerobic condition it increases progressive upto 5 to 7 weeks of incubation. The carbon sequestration in anaerobic condition was found higher compared to aerobic condition showing more than 90 % sequestration by the application of partially decomposed manures. The C mineralization data fitted very strongly to the first order kinetic model showing cowdung as a more responsive manure to C mineralization in relation to mineralization potential values.

To examine the carbon (C) mineralization pattern and rate of C sequestration of bioslurry and manures under aerobic and anaerobic soil conditions.

The incubation experiment was conducted in the Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. Soils were collected from BAU farm (Old Brahmaputra Floodplain, AEZ-9) at 0-15 cm depth of a field and thoroughly mixed. The soils were spread on brown paper for air-drying. The air-dry soils were ground and passed through a 2-mm sieve to remove roots and other debris.Four types of organic manure viz. cowdung, cowdung bioslurry, poultry manure and poultry manure bioslurry were used in this study. The manures were air-dried, ground and passed through a 2-mm sieve.An amount of 100g air-dry soil was weighed into a series of small plastic containers. Air dry finely ground partially decomposed cowdung, cowdung bioslurry, poultry manure and poultry manure bioslurry @ 1.5, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 g kg-1 soil (equivalent to 3, 5, 10 and 20 t ha-1, respectively) were thoroughly mixed with soil in separate containers. A control container (without organic manure) was run along with each set of incubation. Two moisture levels – one field capacity/aerobic (25% soil moisture) and another submerged/anaerobic condition (1 cm standing water above soil) were maintained.The jars were incubated at room temperature (25 ± 2°C) for 16 weeks. All the treatments were replicated twice. The rate of C mineralization from organic manure was measured by CO2 evolution method. The CO2 evolved from the organic manures were absorbed by NaOH. The amount of CO2 absorbed by NaOH trap was measured by titrating with 0.1M HCl using 2ml of saturated BaCl2. During titration two to three drops of phenolphthalein indicator was added to the NaOH solution. The end point was reached when the solution turned from pink to clear. The first measurement was taken 2 days after incubation (DAI), the second measurement was taken at 7 DAI, then measurement was taken at 7-day intervals until 8 weeks thereafter measurement was done at 2-week intervals. The mass of CO2 evolution was calculated using following formula (Wilde et al., 1972).

From this experiment it may be concluded that the bioslurry whether it is cowdung bioslurry or poultry manure bioslurry had more stability to C mineralization compared to their original manure (cowdung and poultry manure, respectively). C mineralization in aerobic condition was higher and faster compared to anaerobic condition. Bioslurries can be used and recommended to use as manure in parallel with cowdung and poultry manure for crop production.
