Effect of Quality Seed and Farmers' Seed for Seed Production and Yield Gap Between Quality Seed and Farmers' Seed Used Plot

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI farm, Gazipur during boro'10-11 season to find out the seed effect of quality seed and farmers seed for seed production and probable yield gap. BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan47 were used as test varieties. The results provided that yield could be increased 34.7% and 49.58% through the use of Breeder seed and 31.14 and 47.04 % through TLS for the production of BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan47, respectively .

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of quality seed and farmer's seed for seed production and yield gap of rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute farm during Boro season of 2010-11 to investigate the effect of quality seed and farmer's seed for seed production and yield gap of rice. BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan47 were used as test varieties. Regarding this, farmer's seed samples were collected from different locations (Chittagong, Barisal, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Sylhet, Rajshahi Khukna, Cox's Bazar, Satkhira and Bagerhat) of Bangladesh. Breeder seed and truthfully labeled seed (TLS) collected from GRS division of BRRI. Germination percentage, 1000 grain weight and varietals morphological characters were studied before sowing in the seed beds. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Forty five days old seedlings of both the varieties were transplanted with 3 seedlings hill^-1 at a spacing of 20x20cm.The unit plot size was 4x2.5m. Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate were applied @ 270, 130, 120, 70, 10 Kg ha^-1, respectively (BARC, 2005). All other operations were followed as BRRI recommendation (BRRI, 2008).Yield components such as number of tiller hill^-1, panicle hill^-1, spikelet panicle^-1, 1000 grain weight and grain yield were calculated following normal procedure. The collected data was then analyzed using IRRISTAT software and means were expressed through LSD values.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of this studies is that rice yield could be increased by 2.46 to 2.89 t ha^-1 using quality seed of BRRI dhan29 and 2.91 to 3.52 tha^-1 by using quality seed of BRRI dhan47. If this gap can be minimized properly the country may be able to sustain food security for her huge population.
