Present Status of Fish Culture in BARIsal District of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Most fish farmers (81%) use lime in their pond as a task for pond preparation. All the targeted farmers release hatchery produced fry except 2% use natural fry. Most of the fish farmers (63%) directly stocked the fishes in the grow-out ponds, 12% stocked firstly at a nursery pond and the rest stocked in the hapa before releasing of the fry in the grow-out pond. The highest stocking density (69%) in the study area was found 100 to 200 fry/decimal and the highest (81%) fish farmer stocked the fingerling size are from 0.5 to 2.0 cm. Most of the farmers (49%) preferred to culture of Tilapia, Carp polyculture (19%), Pangas (24%), Shing (2%) and koi (5%). Regarding the profitability of fish culture, about 53% people considered it as profitable, 29% said non-profitable and 18% people reflected fish farming as a risky business. These results revealed that there is a serious lack of technological knowledge and capital which led the fish culture as a non profitable business in Barisal district. It is therefore essential to provide the necessary training facilities with institutional and organizational supports, credit facilities and extension services for sustainable fish production of rural fish farmers.

Objectives:

1.To understand the existing pond fish farming systems in some selected areas of Barisal district and

2.To identify the constraints of pond fish production in the areas.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Barisal district in the southern Bangladesh.Four Upazilas namely Bakerganj, Gaurnadi, Barisal Sadar and Mehendiganj upazila of Barisal district were selected for the present study. Data were collected from 200 pond owners randomly covering the selected study areas where each Upazila consist of 50 samples. The areas were selected considering the intensity of fish farming areas, dependency of farmers on fish farming, communication facilities in the area, and activities of GOs and NOGs on fish farming.The present study was based on field survey where primary data were collected from farmers who are involved in pond fish farming. For collecting data both individual and group interviews were also applied with different degree of effectiveness of the farmers’ information. The data were collected from June to November 2013.The questionnaire was designed with both closed and open form of questions. The draft questionnaire was tested with 10 fish farmers in the study area. In the pilot survey, much attention was given to any new information which was not designed to be asked, but was important and informative towards the objectives. The questionnaire was changed, modified and rearranged according to the experience. Thus final survey questionnaire was developed in logical sequence so that farmers could answer systematically and confidently. The farmers who have own ponds were mainly considered to collect fish farming information.For this survey Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted with fish farmers. In this research, FGD was used to get an overview of particular issues such as existing fish production system, constraints of fish farming and farmers’ socio-economic condition. A total of 20 FGD sessions was conducted where each group size of FGD was 5 to 7 farmers. FGD session was held in front of village shops, under the big trees, farmer's houses and school premises.

Achievement/Findings:

From the result it can be assumed that utilization of modern technology can increase the fish production two and half time more than that of current production. Government and other related NGOs should have to take proper step to make the fish farmers adapted with improved technology. Government and other organizations should play their assigned role by disseminating technology to the farmers and arranging necessary training for scientific methods of fish production in pond. This will not only increase the fish production but also fulfill the protein demand of our country.
