Potential of Nursery Enterprises in the Coastal Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The percentage of small nursery (0.2 -1.0 acre) decreased from 96.67% to 63.24% since establishment. Whereas the percent of medium size nursery (1.0 - 3.0 acre) increased from 3.33% to 33.33% and the large nursery (above 3.0 acre) occupies from 0 to 3.33%. The primary investment of maximum (53.33%) nursery owners were BDT 5,000 – 25,000, 40% owner invested less than BDT 5,000, 6.67% owner invested above BDT 25,000. They invested the initial establishment cost from their personal savings (43.15%), bank loan (19.35%), both personal and bank loan (19.03%) and others (6.45%). Half of the owners (50%) collected their primary mother plant samples from other nurseries but later on majority of them became self-producer, which is the indicator of profitable and efficient nursery enterprise. Among the collections, horticultural plant species consisted of 72% of the total species and non-horticultural species were 26%. The annual earnings from horticultural saplings were the highest (72%). Marketing of the nursery products (seedlings/saplings) were done mainly during rainy season (July-Aug.). The retailer and local people were the main customers of the nursery products of central coastal region of Bangladesh. The highest selling value of the horticultural products is fruit trees and others were ornamental plants, vegetables, medicinal plant and spices.

Objectives:

The study was undertaken to assess the potential of nursery enterprise in the coastal region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The survey covered a total of three administrative districts namely Patuakhali, Pirojpur and Barguna of central coastal region of Bangladesh and the study was carried out between January to December 2010.The area lies under Agro ecological zone 13 (AEZ 13) named low Ganges river floodplain soils of clay loam in texture (FAO, 1988). Sub-tropical climate prevails over the area which is characterized by high temperature, high humidity, heavy precipitation from April to October and relatively low temperature and low rainfall with high humidity from October to February.The materials used to collect the data included measuring tape, a digital camera and a pre-tested questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to obtain information on year of establishment, land coverage, capital investment for nurseries, source of collection and species diversity in the nurseries, management techniques and marketing system of the nursery products.

Sampling techniques and methods

A preliminary survey was carried out in the three districts. From three districts, a total of thirty nurseries were selected randomly for interview. The interview module was pre-tested before final data collection to examine the suitability of different questions and statements included in the interview schedule. Expert opinions were also taken to ensure effectiveness of the interview schedule. Primary information were collected through semi structured questionnaire survey and among those thirty nurseries were selected from three districts. The selected nursery owners were interviewed to collect information. Collected data were analyzed using the MS Excel program and Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS).

Achievement/Findings:

An increasing trend of farm size from their establishment time was found in central coastal region of Bangladesh. Nursery owner themselves act as the main source of investment in their medium land area where moderate species diversity was the promising one. Among the species studied, the horticultural seedling and saplings showed the most benefited area in nursery business sector. Though there is a lack of modern nursery facilities, nursery owners practiced good management for their business. Further work on modern nursery management techniques could be done.
