Updating of Soil and Land Resource Utilization Guide, Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Upazila consists of 9 unions having 57 mauzas and 1 municipality. Kalapara Upazila is covered by Ganges Tidal Floodplain. Medium high land predominates (71.9%) in the Upazila. Major areas are covered by clay loam (36.1%), clay (32.5%) followed by loam (3.3%) soils. Four soil groups namely Ramgati (2.5%), Jhalakati (36.1%), Barisal (32.5%) and silty alluvium (0.8%) are identified in the Upazila. Water recedes from 17.0% land within Kartik enabling timely sowing of rabi crops. Poorly drained soils predominate (71.9%) in the Upazila. Major areas are covered with Fallow-Boro (43.2%) cropping pattern followed by Rabi crops (chilli/water melon/Futi/Khira/groundnut/potato/sweet potato/mungbean/felon/Khesari/sunflower/sesame/maize)-fallow-T.Aman (10.4%); Rabi crops (chilli/water melon/Futi/Khira/groundnut/potato/sweet potato/mungbean/felon/Khesari/sunflower/sesame/maize)- T.aus -T.Aman (8.5%) and Fallow-T.Aus-T.Aman (5.7%).Forest cover is 4.1%.During March-May some of soils remain slightly saline to extremely saline.In general soils are found deficient in N & P.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Aerial photo-interpretative soil and landform map (1:25,000) of Kalapara Upazila is prepared using remote sensing and GIS technique. The map consists of several mapping units comprising physiography, land form ,land type, soil type and their proportions in the mapping units. Field survey is carried out in Rabi season preferably after T.Aman harvest. Soils are checked by opening mini-pits along the catena following a traverse line so as to accommodate maximum variability. Composite soil samples are collected following approved technique for each land type and soil groups @ 1 sample per 200 ha. Data on crops/cropping patterns, inundation depth and duration, fertilizer/irrigation applied in all checking points for each mapping units in the Upazila. Map is corrected based on changed features observed during field survey. Physical and chemical data are processed and guide is prepared.

Poorly drained soils predominate (71.9%) in the Upazila.Most of the cultivable land remain fallow during rabi season due to extreme soil salinity.Major areas are covered with Fallow-Boro (43.2%) cropping pattern followed by Rabi crops (chilli/water melon/Futi/Khira/groundnut/potato/sweet potato/mungbean/felon/Khesari/sunflower/sesame/maize)-fallow-T.Aman (10.4%); Rabi crops (chilli/water melon/Futi/Khira/groundnut/potato/sweet potato/mungbean/felon/Khesari/sunflower/sesame/maize)- T.aus -T.Aman (8.5%) and Fallow-T.Aus-T.Aman (5.7%). Forest cover is 4.1%.During March-May some of soils remain slightly saline to extremely saline. In general soils are found deficient in N & P.Arrangements should be made should be made to harvest rain water and preserve it for irrigating rabi crops.
