Marketing of Guava in Selected Areas Under Southern Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study highlighted mainly on some basic information pertinent to marketing cost, margin, price spread of guava and marketing problems at farmers' and different intermediaries' level and suggested necessary measures for improving guava marketing. It was found that intermediaries like Faria, Bepari, Arathdar and retailer were involved in guava marketing. Per quintal marketing cost for farmer was Tk. 149 while for Faria, Bepari. and retailer were Tk. 49, Tk. 92, and Tk. 53 respectively. Arathdars commission (Tk. 25/ q) was the major cost item for farmer. Besides, weight loss and damage (Tk. 37/q) and transportation cost (Tk. 23/q) were the two major marketing cost items for Faria, Bepari and retailer, respectively. The study indicated that longer the marketing channel, lower the farmers' share (53%), which meant that the smaller channel is efficient than the longer channel in terms of farmers' share and consumers' welfare. The farmers and intermediaries faced various problems like low market price (84%), price instability (66%), insufficient storage facilities (95%), lack of institutional credit (59%), lack of market information (63%), inadequate transport facility (69%), inadequate physical facilities (75%) in the market and weight loss and damage (86%) of guava during guava marketing.

Objectives:

a. To identify the different marketing channels and intermediaries involved in guava marketing.

b. To assess marketing margins and analyze price spread of guava from producers to consumers.

c. To find out the marketing problems faced by farmers and different intermediaries.

Methodology:

Three important guava growing areas, namely Swarupkathi under Pirojpur, Pirojpur Sadar and Babugonj under Barisal district have been purposively selected for the study .The rationale behind the selection of these particular areas lies in the fact that guava is widely and commercially cultivated in these areas. Farmers and traders belong to guava enterprise were the respondents for the study. Besides, one primary market (village level) and one secondary market (Thana/ district level) were identified and selected as the major guava marketing centres in each area. Sixty guava growers and 45 traders were selected, taking 20 farmers from each area and 15 traders (5 Faria, 5 Beparis, 5 retailers) from each primary market. Forty five traders were also selected randomly from secondary market, taking 15 traders (5 Beparis, 5 Arathdars, and 5 retailers) form each secondary market to constitute the sample for the study . Data were collected by interviewing the individual respondents with a pre-tested survey schedule. Information obtained were related to the period from July to August 2002. Calculation of Arathdars' margin and profit were ignored here because they were in fact a commission agent receiving commission at a fixed rate of 5% from the farmers. The farmer's share in consumer's taka was measured as follows: F=[(R-M)/R)x100], Where, F= Farmer's share in retail price or in consumer's taka, R= Retail price or consumer's taka and M= Marketing cost.
