Updating of Soil and Land Resource Utilization Guide, Sherpur Sadar Upazila, Sherpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

. The Upazila consists of 1 municipality, 13 unions having 106 mauzas. The Upazila is subdivided into 3 physiographic units-Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (69%), Young Brahmaputra Floodplain (25%) and Active Brahmaputra Floodplain (4%). Old Brahmaputra Floodplain consists of ridge and basin. In ridges Sherpur Jamalpur, Sonatala, Silmandi soil group and in basins Ghatail and Balina soil groups are identified. Lower part of the ridge and basins are inundated shallow to moderately deep. In Young Brahmaputra Floodplain Sonatala, Melandah and Dhamrai soils are found in ridges and Bararchar soils in basin. In Active part sandy and silty alluvium is found.High land, medium high land, medium low land and low land occupy 32%, 35.4%, 18.0% and 5.7% of the Upazila respectively. Major areas are covered by loam soils (52.5%) followed by clay (17%), clay loam (10.5%), sandy loam (9.4%) and sand (1.7%). About 85.9% of the total area is suitable for upland rabi crops. About 22% area of the Upazila is suitable for year round vegetable cultivation.

Objectives:

Update soil and land resource inventory

Methodology:

Aerial photo-interpretative soil and landform map of the Upazila is made by using remote sensing and GIS technique. The map consists of several mapping units comprising physiography, landform, land type, and soil type and their proportions in different mapping units. Field survey is carried out in rabi season preferably after T. Aman harvest. Soils are checked by opening mini-pits along the catena following a traverse line so as to accommodate maximum variability. Composite soil samples collected following approved technique from each land type and soil type in different mapping units. Data on crops/cropping patterns, inundation depth and duration, fertilizer/irrigation applied are recorded in each checking points of different mapping units by interviewing the farmers. Map is corrected by accommodating changed soil and land features. Physical and chemical data are processed and the guide is prepared.

Sherpur, Sonatala, Melandah soils are light textured and mostly suitable for upland crops like sugarcane, wheat, potato, mustard and vegetables. Irrigated rice should not cultivated in these soils. Silamandi, Dhamrai and Ghatail soils are suitable for irrigated rice.Boro-fallow-T.Aman (30.2%), Boro-fallow (16.4%), Mustard-Boro-T.Aman (7.3%), Rabi crops-Jute-T.Aman (6.2%), Rabi crops-B.Aus-T.Aman (5.8%), Boro-Deep water Aman (4.1%) are major cropping patterns.
