Water Productivity of Wheat and Ground Water Level Fluctuation Pattern at BAU Farm.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) farm during the Rabi season (25 November 2011 to 24 March 2012) to investigate the possible effects of irrigation water and variety on wheat production. The field experiment was set up using split plot design (SPD) with two modern varieties (MV) of wheat BARI Gam-25 (V1) and BARI Gam-26 (V2), each of which received four irrigation treatments viz., I1: control, I2: 17-21 days after sowing (DAS), I3: (17-21 + 45-50) DAS and I4: (17-21 + 45-50 + 75-80) DAS, that were randomly replicated thrice. Irrigation was applied on the basis of IW (Irrigation Water) and CPE (Cumulative Pan Evaporation) ratio. Recommended doses of fertilizers were applied. The variety and the irrigation treatments significantly affected the wheat yield and some other yield contributing characters. The study revealed that maximum grain yield was found for the variety BARI Gam-25 which was 4.11 t/ha-1 whereas BARI Gam-26 produced 3.90 t ha-1. It was also revealed that though the highest grain yield (4.32 t ha-1 was found in treatment I4, its water productivity was the lowest (289 kg h-1cm-1 ir 2.89 kg m-3) of all. On the contrary, treatment I3, gave a yield of 3.47 t ha-1 which was the lowest one but having the highest water productivity of 484 kg ha-1cm or 4.84 kg m-3, indicating less use of water. The grain yields in treatments I1 and treatment I2 were 3.47 t ha-1 and 3.99 t ha-1) respectively, significantly lower as compared to I3 and I4. The highest irrigation requirement (7.78 cm) was found in treatment I4, while treatment I3 needed only 5.08 cm of water saving about 2.70 cm of water. The highest interaction effect on grain yield was found as 4.42 t ha-1 for the combination of V1I4. The effect of variety on plant height and harvest index was significant at 1% level of probability. The irrigation treatment also affected plant height, panicle length, nos. of spikelet per panicle, straw yield and biological yield at 1% level of probability. The study also revealed that increasing water stress reduced the plant height, number of effective tillers per hill, grain yield, straw hyield and biological yield. Considering all the outputs of the experiment, it can be inferred that practicing interaction V1I4 would be the best choice for wheat cultivation at BAU farm.
