The effect of incision date on the incidence of Alternaria blight {Alternaria brassicae (Berk) Sacc. and A. brassicicola (Schew)} and seed yield of cabbage was studied in two successive crop seasons during 2003 – 2005 at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jamalpur. The incidence of Alternaria blight was found to decrease with the delay of incision date and it was the highest in case of January 5 and the lowest in January 30 incision. Early incision appreciably enhanced the yield contributing characters like number of pod/plant, pod length, number of seed/pod and seed yield/plant. Seed yield per hectare was higher in January with 5 – 10 incisions having the highest seed germination. Seed infection by Alternaria spp. was more in January in case of 5 – 20 incised plant. Good quality higher seed yield of cabbage with lower disease incidence was obtained from the crop that was incised on January 10.

The present study was therefore, undertaken to find out the suitable incision date for obtaining the optimum yield of good quality cabbage seed.

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) Jamalpur during 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 crop seasons. Cabbage head was incised in six different dates at 5 days interval starting from 5th of January and continued up to 30th January. Recommended doses of manure and fertilizers were applied at the time of final bed preparation (Razzaque et al., 2000). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. BARI Cabbage-2 (Agradute) was used as planting material and 35 days old seedlings were transplanted in 2 m x 1 m plots maintaining a plant spacing of 50 x 40 cm. Ten seedlings were transplanted in each plot in two rows. The seedlings were watered immediately after transplanting and continued for 3 days to facilitate their establishment. Five plants from each plot were randomly selected and tagged for data collection. At 70% pod maturity (partial yellowing), data on infected pod (%), number of spot/pod, disease incidence were recorded on the basis of 0-5 scoring scale (Meah, 1994) and percent disease index (PDI) of pod spot was calculated according to Rahman (2000). Number of pod/plant, pod length, number of seed/pod, seed yield per plant and per hectare were recorded just before or after harvest). After harvest the plants of each plot were stacked for 4 days, sun dried and then threshed manually for seed. Seed germination and seed-borne Alternaria were recorded according to ISTA (1976).

Disease incidence: Incision date did not have significant effect on percentage of pod infection where hundred percent pod infection was recorded in all the six incision dates in both the cropping seasons. In 2003-2004 crop season, higher number of spot/pod was recorded in case of January 5 incision. The effects of incision made on January 10, 15 and 20 on spot number were statistically similar and these were significantly low compared to those of January 5 incision. The significantly lowest and statistically similar number of spot/pod was recorded in January 30 and 25 incisions. In 2004-2005 crop season the effect of incision dates showed almost similar trend of disease spot/ pod.  In 2003-2004, significantly higher PDI of pod spot was recorded on January 5 and 10 incision treatments which was followed by January 15 and 25 incisions. January 20 and 30 incisions produced the lowest PDI  In 2004-2005 crop season the effect of incision dates on PDI was statistically similar except for January 30.

Seed yield and yield components: The largest number of pod/plant was recorded from the plants incised on January 5 and January 10 in both the cropping seasons which was followed by January 15 and January 20 incisions. However, pod number/plant gradually decreased with the delay of incision date and significantly lower number of pod/plant was recorded on January 30 incision in both the seasons. The longest pods were recorded from January 5 and 10 incisions during both the cropping seasons. In 2003-2004, January 15 and later incision yielded shorter pods which were statistically similar. In 2004-2005, cropping season, January 5, 10, 15 and 25 incisions produced better pod length than January 20 and 30 incisions. In 2003-2004, the maximum number of seed/pod was obtained from January 5 incised plants followed by January 10 and 15 incisions, but they were statistically similar. Besides, lower seed/pod was recorded on January 25 and 30 incision. In 2004-2005, the highest number of seed/pod was recorded on January 10 incisions where, January 5, 15, 20 and 25 incisions were statistically similar. The lowest number of seed was recorded in case of January 30 incision which was statistically similar with those obtained from January 15 and 25 incisions. Incision dates did not have significant effect on 1000 seed weight in both the cropping seasons. However, comparatively higher 1000 seed weight was recorded from plots incised earlier. In 2003-2005, the highest seed yields (per plant and per hectare) were obtained from January 5 incised plants which was followed by January 10 incised plants though they were statistically similar.

Seed germination and seed borne Alternaria: Cabbage seeds obtained from plants incised on January 5 to 15 gave 87 to 93% germination in both the cropping seasons. However, 48 to 71% germination of seeds was recorded for January 20 and 25 incisions. Only 14 and 19% germination was recorded on seeds obtained from January 30 incised plant. The maximum percentage of seed-borne Alternaria was recorded on seeds of early incised plants as compared to late incised plants. The highest seed infection was recorded from January 5 and the lowest from January 30 incised plants.
