Combining Ability Study in Snake Gourd (trichosanthes Anguina L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The nature and extent of combining ability of parents and crosses and the mode of gene action in controlling the individual characters were estimated in a study of 6 x 6 dial lei including reciprocals. The significant mean sum of squares due to general and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) for these characters indicated both additive and as well as non-additive type of gene actions were involved for the expression of these characters. The parent P₄ was the best general combiner for fruits per plant, first male and female flower, node number. Higher significant SCA effects were found in the cross combinations P₂ x P₃ for early fruit maturity, P₁ x P₅ for early first male and female flower with longest vine, P₁ x P₂ for fruit weight per plant; P₁ x P₅ for average fruit- weight. Significant reciprocal effects were observed for first male and female flower appearance node number, fruits per plant, flower opening days, fruit yield per plant, average weight of fruits per plant and seeds per fruit Reciprocal cross P5 x P3 was found best for early flowering, P₄ x P₂ for yield per plant. The best heterotic crosses for earliness and fruit yield per plant were P₆ x P₂, P₅ X P₁ and P₁ X P₂. respectively. Such crosses could be used for exploitation of heterosis in desirable direction. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh during May 2001 to September 2002.

Objectives:

To know the general and specific combining ability in snake gourd of this study.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur during May 2001 to September 2002. Six diverse genotypes of snake gourd namely SG001, SG004, SG007, SG0I6, SG018 and SG025 designated as P₁ P₂, P₃, P₄, P₅ and P₆ respectively. The six parents were grown and crossed in all possible combinations including the reciprocals during February to May, 2001 to obtain 15 F_I and 15 reciprocal F₁s. The parents along with their F₁'s were grown during July 2002- October 2002. The experiment was set in a randomized block design with three replications. There were three pits per replication and one plant per pit was retained. The spacing adopted was(2.0 x 2.0) m². A good drainage system was maintained for drain out of rain water from the field: The data were analyzed for combining ability following model 1 and method 1 (Full diallel set) of Griffing (1956).

Achievement/Findings:

Both additive and non-additive gene actions in the expression of different characters which non- additive gene actions were predominant in their inheritance. The parent P₄ was the best general combiner first male and female flower node number. P_I x P₅ for early first male and female flower with longest vine, P_I x P₂ for fruit weight per plant. Follow up study may be initiated for development of hybrid variety utilizing the results obtained from the present investigation.
