Effect of Genotypes and Phosphorus Levels on Yield and Yield Attributes of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Phosphorous efficiency of the wheat lines (BA W923 and BA W966) and varieties (Kanchan and Chirya) were evaluated in the farmers' fields of the Multiplication Test sites, Sherpur during rabi season 2000-200 I under AEZ9. Three levels of phosphorus (0, 30 and 60 kg P ha^-1) were used. Chirya produced significantly the highest grain yield (4.31 t ha^-1) followed by Kanchan (4.19 t ha^-1, BA W966 (3.87 t ha^-1) and BA W923 (3.80 t ha^-1). Application of phosphorus @ 30 kg ha^-1 enhanced the yield significantly compared to the other doses. In interaction effect of variety (Chirya) X phosphorous (30kg ha^-1) produced statistically similar yields with Kanchan X P (30kg ha^-1), BAW 966 X P (30kg ha^-1) and Chirya X P (60 kg ha^-1). The results revealed that Kanchan, Chirya and BA W 966 at P (30 kg ha^-1) level performed are superiorto the rest of the treatments.

Objectives:

To identify the suitable doses of phosphorus with respect to wheat variety/ line and their impact on wheat production.

Methodology:

The trial was conducted in the farmers' fields at Sherpur by On-farm Research Division, Jamalpur during rabi season 2000-2001. The soil belongs to Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain under Agro-Ecological Zone 9 . The experiment was laid out in a split- plot design with four replications in two farmers' fields. The unit plot size was 5m X 1.2m. Four varieties lines" of wheat viz. KANCHAN (E-l), CHIRYA (E- 2), BA W-923 (E-3) and BA W-966 (E-4) were evaluated with three levels of phosphorus (a, 30 and 60 kg P ha^-1). Fertilizer doses were placed in main plots while vars../lines in the sub-plots. Seeds were sown @120 kg ha^-I continuously in a five meter long row spaced 20 cm apart in each plot comprising six rows. Fertilizers N, K and S were applied @ 100-40- 20 ha^-1, respectively and P as per the treatment. One third of N and full doses of P, K and S were applied in the form of Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP), Murate of Potash (MP) and Gypsum, respectively at the time of final land preparation. The rest nitrogen was applied in two equal doses: Seeds were sown on 7 December 2000. The experiment was irrigated thrice at crown root initiation, booting and grain filling stage (21, 55 and 78 days after sowing). Two weedings were done at 36 and 58 days after sowing. All the varieties/lines were harvested at the maturity. Data on grain yield was recorded leaving three lines from each side of the unit plot. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were separated by DMRT using computer package programme MSTAT-C.

Achievement/Findings:

It was revealed that inherent capacity of the variety might have compensated to the yield loss caused by P_o level. It was also noted that the varieties under stress situation performed better compared to the lines.
