On-farm Evaluation of Some Promising Bread Wheat Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five bread wheat lines (BAW917, BAW923, BAW936, BAW944, BAW966) were evaluated against a check variety (Protiva) in the farmers' fields of Multilocation Test sites, Melandah and Sherpur during rabi season of 2001-2002 .The highest yield was obtained from BA W944 (4.01 t ha^-I), which did not significantly vary with BA W936 (3.73 t ha^-I) and BA W923 (3.58 t ha^-I). The performance of the promising lines BA W944, BA W936 and BA W923 were better compared to Protiva. Farmers preferred those lines due to their high yield potential, bold grain size and attractive grain-color. It is concluded that yield could be increased with those lines at Jamalpur area under agro-ecological zone (AEZ 9) as compared to the check variety Protiva. Results revealed that BA W944 was the most promising line in respect of yield.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of the advanced bread wheat lines in farmers' fields of MLT Sites during rabi season of 2000-2001 under AEZ 9.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at Multilocation Test (MLT) sites at Melandah and Sherpur during rabi season, 2001-2002. Five bread wheat promising lines were compared to a previously released variety "Protiva ' in the medium highland under irrigated condition. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications at each location. The unit plot size was 5m X 4m. The land was fertilized with 100, 26, 33 and 20 kg NPK and S ha^-I. The sources of N, P, K and S were Urea, Triple Super phosphate (TSP), Muriate of Potash (MP) and Gypsum, respectively. Two-third of urea and full doses of other fertilizers was applied at the time of final land preparation. Seeds were sown continuously in rows 20 cm apart @ 120 kg ha-I from 22 to 26 November 2001 across the locations. One hand weeding was done before crown root (CRI) initiation stage followed by top dressing of the rest one-third urea and irrigation. Another irrigation was applied at primordial stage (60 DAS). Crops were harvested from 20 to 27 March 2002. Ten plants were collected prior to harvest from each plot after attaining maturity to collect data on yield attributes. Data on grain yield was recorded leaving three rows from each side of the unit plot. The collected data were analyzed statistical I y and the means were separated with Duncans New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using a standard computer package programme MSTAT-C.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest yield was obtained from BA W944 (4.01 t ha-I), which did not significantly vary with BA W936 (3.73 t ha^-I) and BA W923 (3.58 t ha^-I). Thus, the advanced Bread wheat line BAW944 is recommended for intensive cultivation in that area.
