Economic Study of BARI Technology Related to Wheat Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted at Farming System Research and Development Site (FSRD), Narikeli, Jamalpur during the Rabi season of 2000-2001 to validate BARI technology economically in producing wheat (var. Kanchon) at farm level. Accordingly, 30 demonstration plots (DP) following BARI package technology and 40 non-demonstration plots (NDP) applying local practices were purposively selected for primary data collection in the farmers' fields. The average human labours required for DP were 36 mandays ha^-1 which was 3% higher than that of DP. Seed rate were 127 kg ha^-1 and 125 kg ha^-I in case of NDP and DP, respectively. In local practice, farmers used urea @ 210 kg, TSP 99 kg, MP 80 kg and Gypsum 38 kg ha^-1 for NDP while Urea 220 kg, TSP 150 kg, MP 60 kg and Gypsum 110 kg ha^-1 for DP. Production cost was 13% higher on full cost basis and 11% higher on cash cost basis in DP due to more usage of human labour, draft power and fertilizer compared to the NDP. The average yields were 3200 kg ha^-1 and 2283 kg ha^-1 in DP and NDP, respectively. A big gap in yield (917 kg ha^-1) as well as gross return (Tk. 6279 ha^-1) was observed. It is further noted that there were gaps in gross margin i.e. Tk. 4826 ha^-Ion full cost basis and Tk. 5150 ha^-1 on cash cost basis, variable cost between Tk. 1453 ha^-1 on full cost basis and Tk. 1129 ha^-1 on cash cost basis between DP and NDP. However, yield, gross return and BCR would be much higher if BARI package of technology was applied in wheat production.

Objectives:

To validate the BARI package of technology economically in producing wheat in the farmers' fields.

Methodology:

An investigation was carried out with wheat var. Kanchan in the farmers' fields during the rabi season of 2000-2001 at farming system research and development (FSRD) site, Narikeli, Jamalpur. The farmers were randomly selected from the wheat growers Therefore, 40 non-demonstration plots (NDP) under farmers' local practices and 30 Demonstrations plots (DP) utilizing BARI package of technology were randomly selected. Primary data related to wheat production were recorded as per schedule. The chosen farmers of the DP duly applied the BARI package of technology under supervision of the concerned scientists. The farmers for NDP grew wheat following local practices. Data were collected with the help of a pre-tested, pre-designed schedule and summarized, edited and finally analyzed through tabular method using average, ratio, and percentages to fulfill the objectives of the study.
