Profitability of Mustard Production Under Different Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study estimated the yield gap under different management practices at Ullapara and Tarash upazila under Sirajganj district. The production practices of mustard were under DAE package of technology (DP) and farmers' conventional 'practices (NDP) with Tori-7 variety during the rabi season of 2004-2005. Sixty farmers were selected taking 30 from each location for collection of primary data. DP received comparatively higher amount of labour, draft power, seeds and irrigation. Contrarily soil amendment was done with low rates of fertilizer, which affected plant growth, and yield of NDP plot. Further DP plots were nurtured with integrated pest management practices and recommended doses of fertilizers. Production cost of DP plot and NDP plot varied widely (21 % full cost and 14 % cash cost basis) with Tk.15808 and Tk.13678 and Tk.1241 0 and Tk.11690 per hectare on full cost and cash cost basis, respectively. DP and NDP produced average grain yields of 1333kg and 1065kg/ha, which was differ (20%). The yield and gross return gaps were 268 kg/ha and Tk.5798/ha, respectively. Marginal analysis indicated superiority of DAE package of technology (BCR 1.79 full cost and 2.07 cash cost basis) to the conventional practices (BCR 1.82 full cost and 1.95 cash cost basis). The study suggested for applying the DAE package of technology which could reduce this apparent yield and economic gaps.

Objectives:

To estimate the yield gap and profitability of mustard production in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was conducted with mustard varietyTori-7 under different management practices in the farmers' field at Ullapara and Tarash upazila under Sirajganj district during the rabi season of 2004-2005. A survey method were followed to collect the necessary data. A total of 60 samples were collected for the study, which was 30 demonstration plots under DAE approved recommended practices (DP) and 30 Non-demonstration plots (NDP). Data on demonstration plot were collected from secondary sources DAE office at Ullapara and Tarash upazila under Sirajganj district. For "Non-demonstration Plot (NDP)" 30 mustard growers were randomly selected from the study area. Data were collected with the help of a pre-tested, questionnaire. The collected data were summarized, edited and analyzed as per objective of the study. In addition to cost return analysis, the results were presented in tabular forms.
