Brinjal Cultivation Practices: an Economic Analysis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An economic analysis of brinjal cultivation reveals that gross return was the highest in marginal farm (Tk. 119875/ha) due to higher yield compared to other farm size groups. The lowest gross margin was found in landless farm size group (Tk. 103600/ha) due to improper use of production input. Benefit cost ratio was 6.59 on full cost and 10.52 on cash cost basis, where marginal farmers received higher benefit cost ratio (8.15) on full cost basis and 13.14 on cash basis, mainly due to lower cost of production. About 48% respondents applied insecticides one time in a week, 40%, 2 times in a week, 30%, 3 times in a week and 20%, every alternate day. Farmers' controlled their insects with the help of spraying insecticide (74%), irrigation (44%), hand picking (34%), use of balanced fertilizer (26%) and use of light trap (22%). Farmers also used insecticides at seedling stage (50%), vegetative stage (34%), flowering stage (29%) and fruiting stage (17%). Lack of quality seeds, low price of brinjal during harvesting period, stealing of brinjal from the open field, lack of irrigation were also major problems in the study area.

Objectives:

i) To study the cost and return of brinjal cultivation

ii) To assess the existing pest management practice

iii) To identify the constraints to brinjal cultivation.

Methodology:

The survey was carried out in purposively selected five villages under three unions of Sherpur District. Two hundred brinjal growers were selected randomly for the study. A complete list of brinjal growers in each of the selected union was collected during the rabi seasons of 2000-2001. Selected farmers were classified on the basis of land holding as, landless, marginal, small, medium, and large whose land holding assumed to be ranged as 0-0.20 hectares, 0.2-0.50 hectares, 0.51-1.00 hectares, 1.01-2.00 hectares, and above 2 hectares, respectively. Finally, a total of 40 landless farmers, 50 marginal farmers, 30 small farmers, 60 medium farmers and 20 large farmers were selected by applying random sampling method. Pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedules were used for the collection of data. The collected data were analyzed through tabular method, average and descriptive statistics were used as interpreting techniques.

From the preceding discussion, it appears that farmers did not follow specifically recommended package of technology for brinjal cultivation. Besides, most of the practices were followed incorrectly. In the study areas, lack of quality seeds and high price, brinjal stolen in the open field, incidence of pest and diseases were also major barrier of brinjal cultivation. In order to overcome the problems of quality seed and high price of seed, it is necessary to produce sufficient quality seeds locally and ensured distribution in proper time. Insecticide application methods also varied among the study area. Only past experience was applied in controlling the pest and diseases. So short-term training programmes should be arranged for acquiring knowledge about diseases and pest management. The brinjal growers still use excess seed rate and follow improper fertilizer doses. For the introduction of better management, extension work must be strengthened, technology based field day should be arranged for the extension personnel and farmers. Without financial support, it is difficult for the poor farmers to improve management practices. So it is necessary to provide credit with easy terms and condition. Research should be undertaken to evolve more effective procedures for focusing necessary information and other related activities to brinjal cultivation in the context of socio-economic milieu of the country.
