Gene Action for Seed Yield and Yield Contributing Characters in Turnip Rape (brassica Rapa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A 7 x 7 diallel experiment (excluding reciprocal) on Brassica rapa (toria) was conducted to study the nature and magnitude of gene action analysis and inheritance of some selected genotypes for seed yield and other related characters such as days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, primary branches per plant, secondary branches per plant, length of siliqua, siliquae plant^-1, seeds siliqua^-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield plant^-1, harvest index and oil content. The components of variation along with the derived genetic ratios for different traits, showed that the D and H components, which measure additive and dominance variation respectively, were significant for all the traits studied. The results indicated the importance of both additive and dominance components for the inheritance of all the traits in Brassica campestris. However, the magnitude of dominance was higher than the additive component for all the traits except days to maturity, siliqua per plant, which indicated that dominance component had a predominant role in the inheritance of these traits. The positive and negative estimation of h² indicated mean direction of dominance and respective genes towards positive and negative sides, respectively. The results showed that eight characters viz. plant height, primary branches plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, secondary branches plant^-1, siliquae plant^-1 and seed yield plant^-1 possessed positive effects, indicating the mean direction of dominance as well as importance of dominant genes in the expression of these traits. On the other hand days to flowering, days to maturity, seeds siliqua^-1, harvest index and oil content exhibited the values in negative direction, showing the excess of recessive genes for these traits.

Objectives:

To know the hybrid performance of the crosses involving the self incompatible lines.

Methodology:

The seven diverse genotypes of mustard were selected as parents namely, Tori-7, Din-2 BCWY-03, BARI Sarisha-12, BC-2193, SS-75 and BC-I097 which were obtained by selfing (bud pollination) during November 2006. Among the parents BCWY-03, SS-75 and BC-I097 are yellow seeded, while the rest are brown seeded maintaing different level of self incompatibility. The seeds of 21 F₁s obtained from seven parents crossed in all possible combinations excluding reciprocal were the materials for the experiment, which was conducted in the experimental farm of Oil Seed Research Center (ORC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, Bangladesh, during November 2006 to March 2007. Sources of the materials along with some important features of the parents are presented. Twenty one F₁s along with their seven parents were grown on November 09, 2006. The seeds were sown continuously in a randomized block design with 3 replications. Each F_I line and their parents were distributed in single rows of 3 m long with a spacing of 40 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants. From each replication ten randomly selected matured plants from each of the parents and F₁s were used for recording the data namely, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height (cm), number of primary branches plant^-1, number of secondary branches plant^-1, siliquae plant^-1, length of siliqua (cm), seeds siliqua^-1, 1000-seed weight (g), seed yield plant^-1 (g), oil content and harvest index. Oil content was recorded from mass seed of ten randomly selected plants from each plot by using solvent extraction method. Percent of oil in the seed sample was determined by extracting the oil with petroleum ether at 40-60°C in a Soxhelt's extraction apparatus. The data are analyzed for variance according to Jone. The diallel analysis for the components of genetic variances and Wr- Vr graphs for all the characters were done according.
