Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance for Yield and Yield Contributing Characters in Snake Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh during February to May, 2001. The extent or genetic variability in 26 snake gourd genotypes was assessed. Significant differences were observed among the genotypes for all the 15 yield contributing characters studied. Considerable variability was observed for the characters fruit yield per plant, first male and female flower node number and main vine length. Considerable co-efficient of variations were observed for fruit yield per plant, fruits per plant, fruit length and node number of first male flower indicating the scope of selection for those characters. The highest genotypic and phenotypic co-efficient of variation was found lor fruit yield per plant indicating the low impact of environment for expression of this trail. High heritability along with high genetic advance were found for fruit yield per plant, vine length and first male flower node number. Such results indicated that selection based on the above characters will be effective.

Objectives:

1). To assess morphological variability among the available local germplasm.

2). To determine genetic control pattern for yield and its contributing characters.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh during February to May, 2001. The location of the site was about 40 km North of Dhaka city with 24.09° N and 90.26 E longitudes and an elevation of 8.40 m from the sea level. Twenty six germplasm of snake gourd collected by the department of GPB during 1997-98 from different locations of Bangladesh were used in this study. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The inter- and intra- row spacing maintained were (2 X 2) m². There were three pits per replication and one plant per pit on the raised bed, the pits were prepared and left open for one week prior to transplanting. Seeds of all the 26 genotypes were first allowed to soak in water for 48 hours. The soaked seeds were then sown in polyvinyl pot containing a mixture of soil and well decomposed cowdung (1:1), on February, 2000. Recommended doses of manure and fertilizers were applied in the experimental field. The healthy seedlings or 20 days old were transplanted in the pits of the experimental field on March 2000. Two meter spacing between plants on each bed was maintained. The soil around the base of each seedling was pulverized after the establishment of seedlings. Observations were recorded for main vine length (cm), number of primary branches per plant, days to 1^st male flower opening, node number of first male flower, days to first female flower opening, node number of first female flower, nodes on main vine, fruit length (cm), fruit girth (mm), fruits per plant (no.), fruit yield per plant (g), days to fruit maturity, seeds per fruit (no.), weight of seeds per fruit (g) and 100- seed weight (g), The mean, range and standard deviation (σx) for each character were calculated and analysis of variance was done for each of the character. The mean square (MS) of genotypic and phenotypic variance was estimated.
