Effect of Date of Transplanting on Yield and Yield Attributes of Two Advanced Mutants of Rice in Aman Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BIN A), Mymensingh to find out the optimum planting date(s) for two advanced mutants of rice along with two check varieties in Aman season in 1997. The mutants were BINA 115 and BINA 163 and the check varieties were BINASAIL and BR 22. There were three planting dates starting from July I with an interval of 30 days. The last planting was on September I. The plant characters like plant height, number of tillers/hill, panicles/hill, panicle length and thousand grain weight showed significant variation among the dates of planting. The grain yield varied significantly among the varieties irrespective of planting dates. The last planting date September I produced the highest grain yields, 4.5 and 4.04 t/ha given by BINASAIL and BINA 163, respectively.

Objectives:

The present piece of research work was under taken with the objective of the optimizing planting dates for the newly developed high yielding rice mutants BINA 115 and BINA 163.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with two advanced mutants of T. aman rice viz. BINA 115 and BINA 163 along with released varieties of BINASail and BR 22, transplanted in three different dates viz. July 1, August 1 and September 1 at BINA farm, Mymensingh during the aman season in 1997-98. The land topography was medium high with sandy loam texture. The pH of the soil is around 6.5 belongs to the old Brahmaputra alluvial soil tract. The experimental site is characterized by subtropical climate with high temperature, heavy rainfall, high humidity during Kharif season (April to September) and moderately low temperature in the Rabi season (October to March). The experiment laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications where the unit plot size was 5m x 4m. At the time of final land preparation, the whole amount of TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 90 kg and 40 kg per hectare, respectively. Nitrogen as urea was applied in two equal splits at 15 and 30 days after transplanting, respectively at the rate of 150 kg per hectare as top dressing. Thirty days old two seedlings were transplanted in a hill with a spacing of 25 cm x 15 cm. Intercultural operations such as weeding, irrigation and pesticide applications were followed to ensure normal growth of plants. At maturity, agronomic parameters like population/m², plant height, tillers/hill, panicles/rn²,panicle length, panicles/hill, grains/panicle, 1000 grains weight, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index were measured. The data were analyzed using the Computer software Program M-STAT and the means were compared by least significant difference (LSD) .
