Effect of Pianting Method and Sowing Time on the Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Mungbean (vigna Rediete L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during the period from February to June 1999 to identify the suitable planting method and optimum sowing date for mungbean varieties. Two planting methods viz. line and broadcast, five mungbean varieties viz. local, BARI Mung-2, BARI Mung-3, BINA Mung- 2 and BINA Mung-5 and five sowing dates viz. February 5, February 20, March 5, March 20 and April 5 were tested. The results revealed that the planting method had no significant"n influence on yield and yield attributes.Four modern varieties performed better than local variety and the highest seed yield (890 kg ha^-1) was obtained form BARI Mung-2. Significantly the highest seed yield (870 kg ha^-1) was obtained from February 20 sowing while March 20 sowinq yielded the lowest (593 kq ha^-1). BARI Mung-2. BARI Mung-3 and BINA Mung-2 performed better in line sowing compared to broadcast method. Line sowing method was found better when the crop was sown on February 20. BINA Mung-5 gave the highest seed yield (l07l kg ha^-1) when sown on February 20.BINA Mung-2 gave the highest seed yield (1163 kg ha^-1) when sown on February 20 in line sowing method.

Objectives:

To find out the relative yielding ability of five munqbean varieties sown at five different dates under two planting methods.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during February -June 1999. The soil was sandy loam having pH value 5.6. The land type was medium high of non-calcareous dark gray flood plain soil under Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain (AEZ 9). Two planting methods (line and broadcast), five mungbean varieties (Local, BARI Mung-2, BARI Mung-3, BINA Mung-2 and BlNA Mung-5) and five sowing dates (February 5, February 20, March 5. March 20 and April 5) were used. The experiment was laid out in Split-split-plot design with three replications. The land was fertilized with 20-20-16 kg ha^-1NPK respectively, in the form of Urea, Triple super phosphate and Muriate of potash at the time of final land preparation. The crop was sown on as per treatment with spacing of 30 cm x 10 cm in case of line sowing. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Hand weeding was done twice at 20 and 35 days after each sowing. 'The crops were grown under rainfed condition. "Elsan 50 EC" was sprayed at the time of pod formation stages in each sowing to control pod borer and other insects. At maturity, ten plants were selected randomly and collected from each unit plot to record data on yield contributing characters. Collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjusted by Duncan's Multiple Range Test using computer package programme MSTATC.
