This study was undertaken to examine marketing aspects of beef cattle. Study area covered selected markets of Mymensingh and Netrokona districts. The size of sample of the study was 40 which included 10 Bepairs, 15 Dalals and 15 butchers. The data were collected during the month of July I, 1998 to August 2, 1998. Two types of marketing channels were observed. The pricing of beef cattle was done by open bargaining through eye estimation by intermediaries. Most of the time butchers slaughtered aged draft animals or aged milk cows. Of slaughtered animals 47% was cow, 30% bullock, 10% bull and 13% heifer calf and bull calf. Fifteen percent of total cattle sold in the study areas were brought from India and the rest was locally procured. Ninety three percent cattle were sold and 90% purchased through Dalals. Marketing costs of cattle for Bepari-Il and butcher were Tk.51 0 and Tk.462 per cattle. Marketing margin of Bepari-Il for channell and 2 was Tk. 1252 and Tk. 1592 per cattle respectively. Marketing margin of butcher for channel 1 and 2 was Tk. 1823 and Tk. 1783 respectively. The return on investment (ROI) of Bepari-Il was 15% and 19% for channel I and 2 respectively. The ROI of butcher was higher than that of the others. Lack of drainage and shelter in beef cattle markets, lack of business capital, high market tolls, dominance of intermediaries, illegal collection by police, tips and donations, high transportation cost, lack of market information, lack of storage facilities were the major problems associated with beef cattle marketing. Creations of co- operative society and marketing association were the major suggestions to solve the above problems. Planned production and marketing of beef cattle are needed for increasing the overall efficiency of beef cattle marketing system.

To identify the marketing channels, the intermediaries involved and functions performed by them.

The present study was conducted purposively in 8 selected market of Mymensingh and Netrokona districts. From the selected markets 15 samples of Dalals and 10 samples of Beparies of cattle were interviewed Data were collected in such a way that 2 or 3 Dalal and 2 or 3 Beparis of beef cattle were interviewed from each market. Fifteen butchers from 4 selected meat markets were interviewed. Butchers were selected from K. R Market at Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Machua Bazar and Natun Bazar at Mymensingh town, Shamgonj Bazar at Netrokona district. Dalals and Beparies were selected from Haluaght Bazar, Phulpur Bazar and Dhobuura Bazar of Mymensingh district, Shamgonj Bazar and Durgapur Bazar of Netrokona district. Three types of pre-tested questionnaires were used for data collection from the butchers, Dalals and Beparie. Fifteen butchers, 15 Dalals and 10 Beparies were selected randomly from the different Markets. Primary data were collected by the first author himself. The researcher collected secondary data from BBS, journals, publications, reports and others various published and unpublished materials. The data collection period covered the months of July and August 1998. After sorting, the data were carefully edited to eliminate errors. The data were transferred from the schedule to tabulation form for systematic interpretation. Arithmetic means, percentage, ratio were used for analyzing data. Cost and margin of Beparis, Dalals and butchers were calculated and presented in the form of tables.

The findings of the study lead to the conclusion that there were no efficient marketing institution or functionaries in the marketing of beef cattle. The trading of beef cattle was profitable. The return on investment of butchers was higher than others. The demand of beef was higher than the supply. As a result, a large number of beef cattle were coming through the boarder areas. Due to slaughtering a large number of cows, reproduction of beef cattle' are reducing in the country. However, there was a scope to develop beef cattle industry. In addition to the above measures the following specific measures were suggested which would ensure the efficient organization of beef cattle marketing system. The supply of beef in the market depended on the number of retired draft animals or aged dairy cows. So cross breed beef cattle should be developed by government agencies and private entrepreneurs. This cross breed should be adaptable to the climate of Bangladesh. To make this fruitful, government should expand artificial insemination program and increase import of adaptable improved beef cattle from abroad. Scientific rearing knowledge should also be imparted to the farmers and veterinary medical facilities should be made available to the farmers reach. Appropriate marketing training should be given to improve their skills and performance. Sufficient scopes exist there for developing beef cattle industry in Bangladesh. Because it requires smaller land area and beef is widely used in Bangladesh.
