Seasonal Variations of Incidence and Severity of Bakanae Disease of Rice in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Comprehensive survey was conducted in five geographical regions of Bangladesh during 2009 and 2010. The objectives of the study were to investigate the incidence of bakanae disease under natural field condition and understand the effect temporal and spatial variations on the incidence of bakanae disease. Prevalence of disease varied with respect to cropping season and location. The highest hill infection was recorded in Habiganj during Boro season. Bakanae incidence was higher in fields where farmers saved seeds were sown compared to seeds from BADC. Under natural condition, BRRI dhan29 was highly susceptible to bakanae. BRRI dhan50 and BRRI dhan41 was also susceptible to the disease. The infection was low in BRRI dhan28.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to investigate the incidence of bakanae disease under natural field condition and understand the effect temporal and spatial variations on the incidence of bakanae disease.

Methodology:

The survey was conducted during the three rice growing seasons; Aus (March to August), Transplanted Aman (July to December) and Boro (November to May) during 2009-2010. Field selection: Five districts namely Gazipur, Comilla, Habiganj, Netrokona and Dinajpur were selected to study the prevalence of bakanae disease. In each location and season, intensive rice areas under rainfed and irrigated conditions were selected. Thirty bakanae infected fields from each location were randomly sampled for this study. Sampling pattern: For the survey of bakanae disease, a double diagonal pattern was followed in this study. Number of infected hill and number of infected tiller were recorded. The disease incidence was assessed using the following formula. Collected data were analyzed by using CROP-STAT package program. Assessment of cultivar susceptibility: This was expressed as an incidence across all locations of the survey.
