Effect of Post-harvest Operations of Seed Lot on the Incidence of Fusarium Moniliforme

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bakanae caused by Fusarium moniliforme is the seed borne disease and seeds play the vital role in overall disease development. Post-harvest operation such as winnowing and winnowing + sundried were tested to reduced the incidence of F. moniliforme in naturally bakanae infected seeds. After the post harvest operations, the blotter test was used to detect the F. moniliforme on the seeds. Results revealed that post harvest operations of the seeds before preservation had significant effect on the incidence of F.moniliforme in rice seeds. Low infection by F. moniliforme was found in sample which was winnowed and sundried.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of post harvest measures on seed infection by F. moniliforrme

Methodology:

Seeds of BR1 and BRRI dhan44 were collected immediately after harvest from bakanae infected fields. Three kg of seeds was taken a cloth bag. Three bags were used for each variety. Seed sample was taken from one bag without any post-harvest operation and tested for the incidence of F. moniliforme. The seeds of another bag were winnowed and then sample was taken for test. The seeds of third bag were winnowed and sundried for consecutive two days, 6 hours/day and then samples were collected for the test. The blotter test was used to detect F. moniliforme. The experiment was laid out following CRD with four replications for each treatment. Number of seeds infected by F. moniliforme was recorded.

Post harvest operations such as winnowing and sundry of the seeds before preservation had significant effect on the incidence of F.moniliforme in rice seeds. Incidence of the pathogen F. moniliforme was low in the seed sample which was winnowed and sundried (2 days for 6-7hrs) .
