Evaluation of Fungicides for the Control of Bakanae Disease of Rice Caused by Fusarium Moniliforme (sheldon)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bakanae is one of the major disease of rice in Bangladesh and causes substantial yield loss. To control the disease eleven fungicides were evaluated for their efficacy against seed-borne F. moniliforme as seed treatment during 2011 and 2012. The fungicides were evaluated at three concentration levels viz. 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5gm/L/kg seeds. Overall performance of the fungicides was better in suppressing the seed-borne F. moniliforme and increasing seed germination. Among the fungicides, Bavistin, Sunphanate, Nativo and Carzeb completely inhibiting the growth of F. moniliforme in vitro condition at their low (2.5gm/L) concentration. Efficacy of the fungicides reduced to some extent when the treated seeds were washed with fresh water except Bavistin. Maximum (85%) germination was found in Bavistin and Greenzeb treated seeds. The promising fungicides further evaluated to control seedling infection at low (2.5gm/l) concentration and resulted significant reduction of bakanae infected seedlings in pot soil and in seed bed.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Efficacy of fungicides were assessed to control a) seed-borne infection and b) seedling infection. a) Seed-borne infection: About 12 kg BR1 seeds were collected from bakanae infected fields. About 250gm of seeds was taken in a cloth bag and a total of 33 three cloth bags were used. Ten fungicides namely Bavistin, Sunphanate, Nativo, Carzed, Cabrio, Rovral Greenzeb, Sunthio, Celest Extra and Greenzeb. Three different suspensions of each fungicide were prepared by adding 2.5, 3 and 3.5gm commercial fungicide/L water for each kg seeds. The experiment was laid out in CRD with four replications. The seeds were submerged under the fungicidal suspension overnight. Afterward the excess suspension was drained out. The seeds were dried in shed and tested for detection of F. moniliforme following blotter method. Number of seed sprouted and infected by F. moniliforme was recorded. Data were subjected to statistical analysis. DMRT was used for comparison of treatment means. b) Seedling infection: The fungicides effective for controlling seed-borne infection of F. moniliforme were selected. Pots substratum were prepared by mixing soil, sand and well decomposed cow dung in the proportion of 2:1:1 and the mixture was sterilized. The pots (33 x 25cm²) were filled up with the sterilized soil. Fungicidal solutions of selected fungicides viz. Bavistin, Sunphanate Carzed and Nativo were prepared separately by mixing of these fungicides @ 2.5gm/L of water. Infected seeds of BR1was treated by soaking the seeds in fungicidal solution for over night. Treated seeds were sown on the pot @ 50 seeds/pot. The experiment was laid out in CRD with four replications. Number of germinated seeds and bakanae infected seedlings were recorded.

Efficacy of the fungicides reduced to some extent when the treated seeds were washed with fresh water except Bavistin. The selected fungicides also increase the seed germination. Further evaluation of selected fungicides shows significant reduction of bakanae infected seedlings in pot soil and in seed bed.
