Effect of Seedling Treatment with Fungicides on Bakanae Disease of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bakanae disease of rice causes significant yield loss and grain quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate fungicides as seedling treatment for controlling bakanae disease under natural field condition. Bakanae infected rice seedlings were treated with three different fungicides (Bavistin 50WP, Sunphanate 70WP, Carzeb 75WP and Nativo 75WP) and transplanted in the field. The fungicides tested significantly reduced bakanae incidence and increase grain yield except Carzed. Among the fungicides Bavistin performed better. Although seed treatment are known to control bakanae the prospect for chemical control of bakanae infection in the field by seedling treatment with fungicides are bright.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to evaluate fungicides as seedling treatment for controlling bakanae disease under natural field condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the farmer’s field during Aus season 2010 and 2011 at Habiganj district. Twenty five days old naturally bakanae infected seedlings were uprooted from the seed-bed. Fungicidal suspension of Bavistin 50WP, Sunphanate 70WP, Carzeb 75WP and Nativo 75WP were prepared separately @ 2.5gm/L. Therefore, root system and stem base of seedlings were dipped in different fungicidal suspension for 6-8 hours. Seedlings dipping in fresh water served as control. Freshly treated seedlings for each treatment were transplanted in the puddle field following RCB design and the unit plot size was 3 X4 m². Percent hill infection, percent tiller infection, tiller per sqm, panicle per sqm and yield were recorded form each plot of the field experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

All the tested fungicides significantly reduced bakanae incidence and increase grain yield except Carzed as seedling treatment. Among the fungicides Bavistin performed better. Although seed treatment are known to control bakanae, the prospect for chemical control of bakanae infection in the field by seedling treatment with fungicides are bright.
