Poly-culture (carp) Technique in Perennial Ponds Under Low Cost Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The concept of poly-culture of fish is based on the concept of total utilization of different trophic and spatial niches of a pond in order to obtain maximum fish production per unit area. Fish production under poly culture is higher than mono culture system. Results showed that among the different fish species, maximum and minimum average gained body weight was observed in Catla (989.18g) and Thai sorputi (370.42g), respectively. Range of average gained length was 10.47 inch in Catla to 4.17 inch Mrigel. Average fish production of the selected farmer was 117 kg per 22.7 decimal pond area with the range of 60 to 200 kg. The average cost of fish production for above said area was Tk. 6,030 and average net benefit was Tk. 9,645.

Methodology:

Ten farmers were selected having perennial ponds. Different compatible species of fishes i.e. Catla, Mrigel, Silver Carp, Rohu, Telapia and Thai sorputi of different tropic and spatial niches were released in the same pond to utilize all sorts of natural foods available in the ponds. Standard practices of liming, fertilization, stock density and feeding were maintained. Growth performance, production and economic return from fishes were recorded. Sampling for the growth measurements (final weight, weight gain, and yield) of 10% of the stocked fishes were also done as a fortnightly basis.
