Field Capacities, Fuel Consumptions and Operation Cost of Sifeng Brand Power Tiller

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A Sifeng Brand Chinese power tiller was evaluated in practical field condition. The field capacities, fuel consumptions and field efficiencies of tiller in dry land operation were 0.093 to 0.200 ha/hr and 1.23 to 1.59 I/hr and 74.78 to 91.08% respectively. In wet land condition, the field capacities, fuel consumptions and field efficiencies of tiller in wet land operation were 0.193 to 0.276 ha/hr and 1.75 to 2.04 I/hr and 67.23 to 89.90% respectively. At present hiring rate of Tk. 700.00 per hectare, the power tiller had a break-even point at 30 hectare per year.

Objectives:

Methodology:

One Sifeng Brand chinese power tiller equipped with rotary tiller was selected for evaluation. The power tiller was tested both in dry and wet land conditions. The tests were carried out in five selected fields. The area of each plot was 0.1 ha and the plot shape was rectangle with the sides in the ratio of 2:1. In dry land operation, up to 3 passes were considered and up to 3 passes were also considered for wet land operation. The test was replicated thrice for each pass. The performance of the power tiller carried out in the experimental field of Farm, Machinery Division of BARl. The soil type was heavy clay, here it is noted as hard soil. Moisture content and bulk density were 23.52% and 1.21 kg/cm³ respectively. The moisture content and bulk density of sandy loam soil (soft soil) were 21.52% and 1.49 kg/cm³ respectively. The tiller was operated at full throttle. The field tests were carried out with backward curved (wet land) and hook type (dry land) rotary blades. The fuel tank was filled to full capacity before and after each trial. The amount refuelling measured by a graduated cylinder was considered to the actual fuel consumption for each trial. The width and depth of cut were measured at random using two steel scale. To measured the speed, two poles 20m apart were placed in the middle of the test run. The speed was calculated from the time required for the machine to travel the known distance.

Achievement/Findings:

1. The operation of power tiller at L₃ gear may not be possible in heavy clay soil of 1.31 kg/cm bulk density and 23.52 % moisture content. 2. Power tiller operating on soft soil consumed less fuel as compared with the operation on hard soil for both dry and wet land condition. 3. Fuel consumption increased with the increase of plough passes or operating depth. 4. Work rate of power tiller in wet land is higher than that of dry land operation for both hard and soft soil candicidin. 5. The overall performance of the power tiller is satisfactory.
