Rice varieties Nizersail, BR1I and BR22 were transplanted from 01 August to 07 October under 7 planting dates during transplant aman (T. aman) season at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute BRRI) farm Joydebpur. Weather sensitivity of these varieties at reproductive phase and cut off planting date for Joydebpur area was investigated. Leaf dry matter changed very slightly due to planting dates. Stem dry matter gradually decreased with increasing panicle dry matter. All varieties produced higher number of panicle 01 September planting. Spikelets and grain panicle-1 decreased with delayed planting. Gram yield was higher in earlier plantings than delayed plantings. Cut-off date of planting for Nizersail was 22 September while 15 September was for BR11 and BR22 at Joydebpur area.

  1. To find out the sensitivity of three transplanted aman (T. aman) rice varieties to temperature variation during reproductive phase
  2. To find out the effect of planting time on dry matter accumulation at heading stage and ultimately the grain yield and
  3. To find out the cut-off date for planting of three varieties at Joydebpur area

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur farm during T. aman'1990  season. The experimental treatments were included seven planning date (01 August, 15 August, 01 September, 15 September, 22 September, 01 October and 07 October) and three rice varieties (Nizersail, BR11 and BR22). Split-plot design was used where planting dates were assigned in main plot and varieties were accommodated in the sub plots with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 4m Thirty five  days old seedling as 4  seedling hill-1  was transplanted at 25 cm x 20 cm spacing.  Fertilizers as N, P2O5, K2O and S were applied at the rate of 60-40-40 10 kg ha-1 from urea, triple super phosphate, muriatic of potash and gypsum, respectively. All fertilizers and one third of urea were applied at basal dose.  Rest of the urea was applied in two equal splits as top dressed at 15 days after transplanting (DAT) and 7-days before panicle initiation. For determining dry matter yield, 9 hills per variety were randomly selected leaving the boarder rows and middle 5 m-2 area and were cut at the ground level at 8, 16, 24 days after start of heading ( DASH) and at maturity.  Leaf blade, stem and fertilized panicles of all plants were separated, oven dried for 24 hours at 700C. These were weighed and expressed as m-2. For determining yield components, 5 hills from each plot were randomly selected leaving the boarder rows and middle 5-m-2 area. Panicles were counted and expressed as panicles m-2. All the spikelets were counted and expressed as spikelets panicle-1. Grains were separated, counted and expressed as grains panicle-1 and 1000-grains weight was calculated. After separating grains, the rest of the spikelets were sorted into partially filled and sterile (unfertilized) spikeletes. Partially filled and sterile spikelets were identified visually. These were expressed as partially filled grains panicle-1 and slunk spikelets panicle-1, respectively . At the maturity of crop, for determining the grain yield., 5 -m-2  area from the middle of each plot was harvested, threshed, weighed, adjusted of 14 % moisture content and expressed as grain yield t ha-1. Collected data were analyzed by following the standard statistical procedure. Grain yield is a function of planting dates was estimated by best fitted regression model, y = ax + bx+c where "y" is the yield, "x" is the planting time in Julian days and "a,b,c" are constants.

BR22 produced the highest grain yield in 15 August planting followed by Nizersail and BR11. Grain yield of BR22 increased up to 15 August planting and started to decline while that of Nizersail and BR11 increased up to 01 September and declined very sharply. The gradual decreased in grain yield might be due to low temperature, which hampered spikelet fertility and grain filling. Grain yield is a function of many parameters like, panicles m-2  grains panicle-1, 1000-grains weight etc. In the present study, it was observed that though panicles m-2 increased in the later plantings, it produced less grains panicle-1 and ultimately less grain yield than the earlier planting. Basis on these results, it may be concluded that the cut-off date of planting for Nizersail is 22 September while that for BR11 and BR22 is 15 September at Joydebpur area in Bangladesh.
