Performance of Some Salt Tolerant Rice Genotypes in Coastal Regions of Bangladesh in Dry Season 2013

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The environmental stresses are now the major problems of crop production. The situation has been further worsened by anthropogenic activities. Therefore, research thrust is more concentrated to enhance crop productivity under environmental stress to cope with increasing food demands. The abiotic stresses such as salinity affects the survival, biomass production and yield of staple food crops. A vast area of Bangladesh is coastal area where soil and water is a big problem for rice production and the problem is more aggravated especially in Boro season. Among the locations, in Satkhira (Ashasuni) only IR59418-7B-21-3 and IR78794-B-Sat 29-1 entries were survived and others were damaged might be due to the salinity stress. The tested entry IR59418-7B-21-3 gave the highest grain yield in 3 locations out of 7 having average yield of 6.39 t/ha. The 2nd highest yielder was IR78794-B-Sat 29-1 which gave the highest yield in one location having average yield of 6.19 t/ha. These two entries, IR59418-7B-21-3 and IR78794-B-Sat 29-1 were survived in Satkhirah (Ashasuni) and which yielded 5.91 t/ha and 4.01 t/ha respectively. Another two entries, BR7100-R-6-6 and BRRI dhan28-Saltol produced yield of 5.82 t/ha and 5.30 t/ha, respectively whereas the check varieties BRRI dhan47 and BRRI dhan28 yielded 6.03 t/ha and 5.54 t/ha, respectively. The growth duration of the tested lines ranged from 143-150 days and was found to be earlier than the check variety BRRI dhan47 which matured in 152 days. The 1^st and 2^nd highest yielder IR59418-7B-21-3 and IR78794-B-Sat 29-1 were found to be matured in 143 and 147 days respectively, which were 9 and 5 days earlier than the check variety BRRI dhan47.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield potential and adaptability of advanced breeding lines at farmers’ field in different agro-ecological conditions in dry season.
To get feedback information about the advantages and disadvantages of the advanced lines from farmers and DAE personnel.

Methodology:

Four salt tolerant advanced lines BR7100-R-6-6, IR78794-B-Sat 29-1, IR59418-7B-21-3 and BRRI dhan28-Saltol along with BRRI dhan47 and BRRI dhan28 were tested at Satkhira (Ashasuni, Debhata, Kaligonj & Shamnagar), Khulna (Paikgacha), Patuakhali (Kalapara), Barguna (Amtoli), and BRRI research farm (Gazipur) during Boro 2013. The unit plot size for each entry was 20 m² (5 m x 4 m). Seeding time was 04 December, 2013 and the seedling ages were varied from 40-45 days among the locations under varied circumstances. Seedlings were transplanted at 25 cm x 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 120: 20: 60: 20: 4 kg NPKSZn /ha. To assess the soil salinity of the experimental area, soil samples were collected and analysed from transplanting to maximum tillering stage in every 15 days interval. Days to flowering (50%) and maturity (80%) were recorded in time. Plant height was measured from 10 randomly selected plants from center and four corner of each plot excluding border area. At maturity, panicles were counted from 1 m² in each replication. From the center of each plot, 10 m² area was harvested for determination of grain yield at maturity. Grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content, and expressed in t ha^-1. Data gathered in the experiments were statistically analyzed using statistical software CropStat7.2 and means were compared with the least significant difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering grain yield, growth duration, farmers’ opinion and non-shattering character the lines, IR59418-7B-21-3 and IR78794-B-Sat 29-1 were found more suitable for saline environment and recommended for proposed variety trial (PVT).
